how does it connect to my router or cable modem? i don't see a main internet line conection.

Like others said here, I just connected it from my existing router into the first plug on this switch and it worked like magic. I used about 80feet of Cat-6 wire with the RJ45 end and have no loss in internet speed.

Can you assign an IP address to this ethernet switch?

No. This is an unmanaged switch.

How often do you lose connection and have to reset the "switch" by unplugging power & plug back in? Thank you

I am not able to with 100% certainty tell you that it's this switch (the 16-port version) that's causing me to lose connectivity in one area of the office, but I feel that it might be the culprit. Other areas not hooked to the switch are unaffected. I've had to unplug and power down/up the device a number of times.
