Failed after only a month - plus a horribly cheap and troublesome enclosure.
I've owned this for just over a month now, just long enough to no longer be able to return it...Here are the reasons for my negative review1) This is the big one... Drive completely died after just over a month of infrequent use. What I mean by 'died' is that none of our computers recognize the drive at all anymore... What I believe has happened is that the internal circuitry has fried. Initially there was no problem with this, and I used it to install three games on my newer HP Laptop. I used it about 2 weeks later to install a utility on another computer and the drive still functioned. Just last night I tried it on my laptop again to install another game, and about half way into the install I got a message to please insert the game disk into the drive to complete the install. The door did open, and the light was on, however the problem was that the computer no longer even recognized that the E: drive was there. I disconnected and reconnected the drive to several USB ports with the same result. Computer never recognized it again. I tried on our other computer and same thing, as though nothing was ever connected to it.2) Metal case is flimsy, causing the actual drive door to not close properly unless wiggled up and down when pushed in. The door is a manual spring loaded push in style - which is no problem if it properly fits into the receiving enclosure. (This would have earned a 3 or 4 rating from me had it been the only issue)3) The drive was extremely slow when it was working. I think the issue was caused by the same faulty circuitry board that eventually completely fried (as mentioned above). To quantify my claim that the drive was extremely slow for a 'USB 3.0' rated device, I replaced it with another drive purchased last night I sourced locally. The brand I purchased has been around since I was a kid and is most commonly known for their audio equipment. It was $25 less expensive at its normal price than the more expensive rival. The speed is amazingly fast! The drive is a top loading USB 3.0 Blu-Ray/DVD/RW drive that cost just under $75. (Amazon Prime also sells the same drive) This particular drive includes the USB 3.0 cord (as expected), but it was unique in that the computer side connection has both a power and a data end, meaning that this drive requires two free USB slots. It's the only top-load model I have found, which is extremely nice because it requires no space in front of the unit. I decided that it was worth the extra for the Blu-Ray writable option as it advertises that it will store 125GB on a single disk. This makes it large enough to store a ton of photos on one disc, as opposed to multiple DVD's.

A slim and light-weight external DVD burner from MthsTec
I purchased this MthsTec USB 3.0 Ultra Slim Aluminum External DVD for my HP Zbook 14" as it doesn't have a DVD drive built-in (Most slim laptops nowadays don't have a built-in optical drive anymore due to the compact design). The package contains MthsTec USB 3.0 External DVD-RW Drive, User Manual, and a USB 3.0 A-Male to Micro-B cable. Do NOTE that this drive has an USB 3.0 Micro-B port on it instead of the more popular USB Type-C so it's better to carry the included cable with you all the time. The good thing is that no external power adapter is needed. The device is pretty thin and its dimension is only 5.8" x 5.6" x 0.6". It's pretty light at only 10 ounce and fairly easy to carry it with me all the time with a bag. The device is listed as USB 3.0 and I do see my HP Zbook recognize it as USB 3.0 device at SuperSpeed (SS). I have also tried it on my other windows 7 laptop and PC with USB 2.0 and it also works. No driver installation is needed and the drive is truly Plug-and-Play. I have tried to burn/read CD/DVD/DVD-DL with it so far and the it works pretty well. The reading/writing noise/vibration is average. It's not loud but it can be heard in a very quiet place like library. However, this shouldn't be a problem in most situations.I haven't tried it with Mac yet and I'll update later when I have a chance but so far it works with most Windows computers I have tried.

Works fine with Windows 10/usb 3.0 with a good cable
Drive worked fine when connected to a Windows 7 desktop with usb 2.0 ports. My new Windows 10 laptop with usb 3.0 ports didn't recognize the drive, although the drive did have power. After much researching on the internet, finally found a solution to try, which was using a different cable. Used the usb 3.0 data/charging cable that came with my phone, and then the drive worked like a champ. Already notified the manufacturer to upgrade their cables, so hopefully this won't be a problem in the future. Haven't tried to write a CD/DVD yet, but seems to read discs just fine. Happy with the drive now that I got it to work.

It works great but does not work at all in Surface Pro ...
It works great but does not work at all in Surface Pro laptop. I had to buy separate SUB port to connect it to the Surface Pro laptop. Microsoft computers with windows 10 are the problem, not the DVD/CD drive. I gave it a 4/5 because in the advertisement stated that it worked in all computers.
