perfect for steaming vegetables
I debated whether to buy this bowl because several reviews complained that the lid did not fit tight. But after thinking about it, I realized it is likely designed that way to allow pressure to escape. Otherwise it could build up to the point of blowing the lid off. This is the same reason you have to lift a corner or poke holes in various types of frozen dinners, etc. People who want to cook with a sealed lid, should try using a pressure cooker instead of a glass bowl to cook in. Pressure cookers are designed so the lid is locked on, but even pressure cookers have to have a relief valve so that the pressure does not get too high. Now I want to say how much I love the bowl I finally bought! Part of the reason I do not eat enough vegies is I hate to cook them. But this bowl changed everything! It is the world's easiest way to steam vegies and none of the nutrients are lost because of draining the juice. There is very little juice because you don't put water on the vegies. I just cooked two florets of broccoli in my new bowl--just broke up the broccoli into pieces, put it in the bowl without any water, sprinkled a little salt on it, put the lid on and cooked it in the microwave (1100 watt) for 5 minutes, and it was perfect. I have to say that is the easiest steamed broccoli I have ever cooked, and I have been cooking for many years.

Excellent Quality!
When organizing my serving dishes a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving, I noticed that the pyrex dish that fits inside one of my silver plated servers was missing, and remembered that it had met my tile floor at Easter with predictable but disastrous results. Of course, I measured the diameter of my server, and found that this one was the same, so I ordered it. While it was too tall for my dish, it was still quite useful for a goodly quantity of sweet potatoes. Best of all, we mashed them an hour before dinner, popped the lid on top of the dish, and put it in the oven to stay warm. Leftovers went right into the fridge, where they were available for consumption the next day. This worked well, and when I try again, I'll make sure to order a shorter dish....Pyrex brand, of course!

Simply, a great product!
Solid as a tank and resistant to any kind of heat, these things are great. For re-heating anything from spareribs to chili to chicken and rice, making relatively small amounts of soup/chili/stew (serving 1 or 2);Use in oven or micro-wave, easy washing, and easy nesting/storage for multiple dishes (invert lid). This casserole dish may represent old technology (Pyrex), but it sure is still viable today.I prefer it to the opaque white ones so popular these days.More durable to, IMO.The dishes are strong and generally hold up under anything exceptvery hard drops onto hard surfaces or equally hard collisions. You've really got to work hard to break these things.Pyrex just works for me.I am going to look for other sizes of this item.I would like to think that a whole line of these would be available, from 2-quart up to deep, 10 or even 12-quart sizes, of these super-useful dishes. At least, that's the way it should be.

Perfect for Microwave Cooking
After using several different (failed) products to cook vegetables in the microwave, I found this covered dish. Since there is no seal on the lid, the steam can easily vent during cooking. My only criticism is that the "handles" are meager and removing the hot dish from the microwave requires full attention. Always let cool on a cloth pad or trivet. I have even successfully cooked poached salmon, and steamed chicken in this pot. It is very easy to clean as well.

Something constant over the years
I love my Pyrex and use it all the time. For over 40 years I had been using a 2-quart casserole that my mother had used before me. No kidding. Recently the lid ended up with a large chip (found the broken piece on the shelf), so I reluctantly purchased a new dish/lid when Amazon ran it on sale for around $11 with the super saver shipping (on purchases over $25) feature. Imagine my surprise when I placed the new lid on the bottom piece of my old Pyrex casserole dish, and it fit! So, the old bottom is still useable, and I get to keep the nostalgia that accompanies it. I particularly appreciate that there was a plastic protector between the new lid and base that I'm keeping to help prevent future chips when they are stored.December 20, 2012 update: In using this casserole, I noticed that the lid really does not properly fit the bottom; there are slight gaps. So, I put the lid on the 40-year-old casserole bottom, and, amazingingly, the new lid fits that piece better. As a result, if you purchase this, immediately check to see that the top fits correctly to the bottom.April 17, 2013 update: In using this dish at 450 degrees for 20 minutes to sear a roast, then reducing temperature to 250 degrees, the dish stained permanently from the meat fat. I did this on two occasions just to verify that it was this action that caused the staining. This is not my mother's Pyrex because I have older pieces where this has never occurred. For this reason I have taken off a star from the rating.

Perfect for microwave oven cooking
The bowl size is just right; the lid you can slide off a bit to let steam out, or not when using in microwave or in the oven. It's made of Pyrex so it won't crack in microwave oven, or regular oven. You can also cook in it and then store any left overs right in the same covered dish. Highly recommend.Oh, and you can even just use the lid in the microwave to cover some other dish where you want to avoid splatter.

Pyrex - The ancient dish.
Pyrex is the perfect utilitarian baking dish and will last for generations if used properly. Avoid sudden temperature changes because it will shatter. If you bake multiple items during the day one cannot beat Pyrex for durability and price. Especially price. Bake, serve, or store, it works and works well. The bonus is 'glass'. It is easy to see how the baking is coming along without having to remove lid.Are there prettier and more versatile baking dishes out there? You bet 'cha. It all depends on preference. I prefer great quality at an inexpensive price.
