What dedication, what inspiration, what a shame
I loved the book!Carli Lloyd has developed into a premier womens soccer player (perhaps the best in the world).Ms Lloyd tells the story of her rise from local recreational soccer to her winning of the 2015 womens Balon d'Or (award as the best womens soccer player in the world). Her journey starts as most, with her loving (although a bit overboard - helicopter as they call it today) parents. Her recognition in high school, club and college soccer, to her being cut from the womens U21 team. She meets her trainer James, and her life changes.James takes Carli and helps her to train, become physically fit, unselfish, and a good teammate - although Carli remains a bit neurotic.Other things happen to Carli however, as her relationship with her parents goes from great to no relationship.Eventually Carli does make it back to the Womens National Team, and goes on to win 2 Olympics, and finally a World Cup.The book talks about the relationships that Carli has with teammates, families, Brian (her seemingly saint like) boyfriend, parents, coaches and friends. While the effort and dedication that Carli Lloyd has to herself and to soccer is inspirational, it was very difficult (as a parent) to see her relationship with her parents dissipate to no contact for years. It always takes two parties to tango -as they say - and in this case, you cant help but feel that Carli is a tad bit selfish. And shame on her parents for allowing themselves to just ignore and avoid their own daughter. I was going to give the book 4 stars for this reason - until I realized that life is not like a movie - bad things do happen to good people, and not all problems can be solvedI found myself cheering for Carli, Cheering for her and her family to get back together (which did not happen in the book), and for my own kids to recognize the dedication to success that they will need, whether they continue to play sports or they choose other careers.

Go Carli!
I loved the gut wrenching honesty here. It is her story, cathartic in nature. I am a therapist and was really touched by the pieces about her relationship to family. As we navigate into adulthood, some of us should find family that support the “us” we choose to be. As a mother, I’m continually amazed how difficult it can be to leave my kids alone to their own journey. Bravo Carli! I loved the details in how hard she worked. I’m often a task master when I want something bad enough. Carli does. I watched her score a goal at the last game when she played against NC Courage recently. I was so happy to see her play and started to cheer only to remind myself-she’s on the opposing team! I cheered inside.

Good read, and interesting insights into both Carli and the USWNT
I enjoyed this book, actually more than I had anticipated. I read a lot of autobiographies but tend to find those written by sports figures to be a bit unidimensional and an irritating combination of self-obsession and self-unawareness. These were not issues with Carli's book. Carli has a forthright and direct writing style, which seems to be representative of her no-nonsense, candid personality. She is engaging in her storytelling - it would be easy for tales of annual sports cycles and training regimens to get tedious quickly, but Carli does a good job of bringing the reader along her progression from child soccer prodigy to world-class superstar. She provides interesting insights into the culture of the USWNT and helps us understand the odd insularity of the team and its resistance to newcomers or any ideas that stray from the party line. I ended up becoming an admirer of Carli's for a number of reasons - her willingness to stand up for what she believes in regardless of external pressures, her willingness to fight for herself even when her family and teammates become a bit toxic, her loyalty to those who deserve it, her commitment to honesty, and her indominatable will to become the best and to work as hard as that requires, with no excuses and with full acceptance of the costs of her success. I hope Carli's family comes around and accepts the olive branch that Carli is offering. She deserves happiness in her family life, especially as she embarks on a marriage of her own. I am also happy that she has ascended to the captaincy of the USWNT - that group could use some level-headed, open-minded leadership free of the mean girls and the hostility to individualism that has characterized it in the past. Well done Carli, and best of luck in all that comes next.

2016 World Player of the Year
Carli Lloyd is astounding, and so is her book! Wayne Coffey encapsulated the Delran girl with 2016, World Player of the Year, yielding an accurate composite of Carli's journey and achievements to date. She had not slowed down in her 2019 World Cup performance. I wholly expect and count on Ms. Lloyd earning another Gold in the 2020 Olympics. She is such a tremendous person on and off the pitch. The fact that she walked out of the crucifixion of Hope Solo in 2007, yet showed the respect due to Abbey Wambach in her final World Cup final appearance, Carli took off the Captains Armband and placed it on Abby's arm. In my opinion, the 2015 US National Women's Team is the greatest to take to the pitch. Proof positive of this assertion lies in the 2019 World Cup Champions made predominately from the 2015 World Champion led by Carli Lloyd!Great story, read it for yourself.

Amazing book, like a movie!!
Very well written book with very lively descriptions of events but at the same time not too technical for the non-football/soccer fan to follow. It takes a lot to expose your insecurities to people but it ends with overcoming them and winning the World Cup, Golden Boot and ballon d'or, then why not? A great page turner.

Great player, poor book.
If you want to learn about Ms. Lloyd, the person, there are a couple of chapters in the book. At times she writes more about others than herself. The rest of the book is merely an uninspired description of games. For which one is better off seeing the actual games in YouTube.

Honest and at times gut-wrenching to hear how hard her struggles were
This was an easy read and a "down to earth" expression of the joys, victories and bitter disappointments that come with, not only getting to an elite level as an athlete, but staying there, working towards a career and longevity. I was not aware of the depth of sacrifices made in order to pursue this type of "Dream". So glad I purchased and read it cover to cover.
