Q: what kind of connectors do I need at the terminals?

The old batteries that I had, have wing nut terminal connectors...When I replaced the batteries, the new batteries had a regular screw-on nut, instead of a wing nut....I'm sure whatever type of connector your battery comes with will be fine

Q: Can the timer be used to control a 12v fan instead of lighting?

I believe your panel is actually a 24-Volt panel! I believe that you MUST have the 24-Volt Morningstar model to use this voltage! I believe the panel you want is "SL-20-24v". There's a couple models of this Morningstar product, to be triply sure, contact Morningstar OR download the user manual of the sl-20-24v
