The Grandmaster Chess Set - Pieces Only - 4.0" King (Ebonized Boxwood)

I have 3 of these sets: burnt boxwood, natural & black lacquered, and red & black lacquered. The lacquered sets are gorgeous, in fact I think I prefer them over the burnt boxwood set! The sets with 4" king fit perfectly on 2.25" squares (for correct sizing you should be able to fit 4 pawns in 1 square and the king base should fill 75% of a square). I like the classic design, and the weight is nice - the pieces feel balanced and solid.

If you like wooden chess pieces, this set will not disappoint. Each piece looks to be hand made (probably not), but the quality is outstanding, and the weight is perfect; even the cat doesn't knock them over when she jumps on the table.

Packaging was first rate. Arrived quickly. Beautiful pieces. Will purchase from here again.

This set is my dream come true! When I was about 18 I wanted a chess set with a 4-in. king just like the top players in the chess club had, but I could only save enough for a set with a 3.25-in king. I am now 68 and decided to finally get a set with a 4-in king! This set is impeccably crafted. The knight is beautifully detailed! The finish superb!I first thought that the description of the black pieces as being made of ”ebonized boxwood” was simply an embellishment for boxwood stained black. I looked it up and ebonizing turns out to be a superior process than staining. Staining is only on the surface, while ebonizing goes deeper into the wood. This means that the black piece can withstand more rough handling without a chip showing the light wood. The price for the pieces seems right too because judging from the Amazon pictures cheaper sets are not as well-made.I also bought the Mahogany Slide-Top Chess Box also sold by The House of Staunton in Amazon.com. This box is also beautifully crafted: I display it in the middle of my living room with pride! It means that “I made it.”

Those of us who are picky about value, quality of pieces, and having a selection can always go to HoS for a great solution. Wanting darker black pieces to go with my best wooden board, I got these in Rosewood Guilded after debating between it and other colors. Gorgeous, especially at the price.

Overall I am very satisfied with the chessmen. All the pieces have a good weight and feel. They are nicely carved with a classic design.

These pieces are gorgeous. They have a nice hefty feel to them as well. The only thing I have to do now is find a classy chess board that compliments the pieces (which is harder to do because they are all sold out where ever I have found a board with 2-inch squares).

Just as advertised, well packaged, and delivered within a few days. These Chess Pieces are well designed, weighted, and look better than expected. I'm using mine on 2 1/2" squares but could easely fit nicely on 2-2.25 inch squares. Impressed with all the detail that has gone into the design . A bargan at this price.
