Q: Will the branches hold fairly heavy ornaments?

Yes actually. I have ornaments in range from very light to quite heavy

Q: What size is the base?

It's currently in storage, but I recall it being a good solid base. Never had trouble with it falling over. My guess is maybe 8x8 or so....prob depends on size of the tree you purchase.

Q: Can the base be removed to allow this tree to fit in an urn beside my front door?

Yes the base does detach from the tree. I would recommend having something for the tree to sit in securely. As you can see the base is square. It would look great sitting in a basket or a galvanized bucket or tub.
