Q: Can you use this water coil in a steel cup?

That’s all I use this heater in is a steel cup. As a truck driver out on the road a few days a week I gotta have some hot coffee or hot tea in the morning to start my day. Steel cup works great.

Q: Can this be operated for extended periods totally immersed (including the plastic head and some wire), with the water near boiling temperature?

No it should not be totally submerged. There is not any temperature control and stays on as long as it is plugged in and will boil water away.

Q: What is the watts rating for this. Took almost 5 min to heat 1.5 cups water to 160 degrees. My elec kettle ($19) takes 2.5 min to boil 1 liter water.

It is 300 watts. I only use mine for travel in case there is no room coffee. I pack a cup, coffee, and the heater. Works great for this purpose. Yes, it takes 5 minutes. I don't think it's what you want to use every day at home, but it is a convenient way to warm up water for coffee or tea.

Q: Can you order replacement fuses?

IF there is fuse inside the handle part, it is sealed in and not replacable
