Not a book for everyone...
Unfortunately this book really didn't do it for me. While my reading genres range from rom com to dark, I always read to be entertained and this story wasn't something I personally enjoyed. It's definitely dark. Really dark. I saw somewhere it was said this is "the next 50 Shades." It's not. 50 Shades was naughty taboo things that made you think "ooh that's hot, maybe I'd want to try that in the bedroom myself." There is NOTHING you would want to "try" personally in this book unless you were a complete sadist.Personally, I love dark reads. K Webster, Ker Dukey, Pepper Winters...their books are all right up my dark alley. But for me to enjoy a dark read, there has to be some redeeming qualities, things have to be made right. Buttons and Lace is in a completely different "dark" category. While the writing itself was okay I felt like maybe the delivery could have been more palatable. This book was just straight up depressing and full of ugly, unspeakable things to me. All of the sex was forced. Not in a "ooh yeah tie me up baby" kind of way. No, it was straight up repeated rape, brutal beatings, sex slaves and human trafficking. All. Of. It. I say this as a warning because everyone is different and enjoys different things. I know some people who will be dying to get their hands on this. The darker the book for them, the better. So if that's the kind of read you enjoy and are entertained by, you'll love this book. Go 1-click right now! If you're more like me where you like the dark journey as long as you find the redeeming light and HEA at the end of the tunnel, this book isn't going to do it for you. So proceed with caution either way. If you have any triggers, here's a warning: don't buy this book because they're basically all included in this story.

Definitely on the dark side
I have been wanting to start this series for a while now. I have all of the books sitting on my Kindle. So, I decided to dive in. I haven't read a good dark romance in a while, so I thought I would finally give this one a go.As I am sitting here thinking about my words for this review, I am a little conflicted. This story is definitely dark. There are parts of it that are very unique to the plot I haven't come across before. However, the main gist of it is very similar to other books written around the same time it was written. Over all, on the plot itself, I felt a little jilted. I was hoping for something completely different.Sticking with the plot. I can only read so many books with a dominating male who is into BDSM so many times. These books can get repetitive and unoriginal. I hate to say that that is how I felt about this one. Although the coming together of these characters is unique in its own, the characters themselves are a dime a dozen in my opinion.I can admit that I breezed through this book. I will most likely pick up the next book soon to see where the progression of this story ends up going. I am curious to see what ends up playing out with these characters. This book is definitely a dark book. It's not for everyone. If you are looking for sweet, this is not a book for you. While the sex scenes are dark, they are hot. But be prepared if you are the type that likes cookie cutter stories. This will not come close to that. Those that like the darker themes, will more than likely enjoy the opener to this series. For me, it was okay. Hoping for a little more with the next one.

If only I could have skipped the first part!
This book was confusing from the start. Who would start a new job on Monday and take a vacation beforehand after being unemployed for 6 months? What day was the big announcement the boyfriend had gotten a new job? How could Pearl just take time off work? None of this was explained. There is no character build in this book. The mouse who put up with the jerk boyfriend Justin in New York suddenly becomes a lion? And not a very smart lion at that. This book has the story line to make it good and the title was spot on. There is just no emotion in the book because there is so little written about the background of the people. Honestly the vineyard and her bedroom with a window were the two things that felt real to me.People just kept popping up! A butler??? A chef who's duties were never fully explained. Maids??I love independent authors but they need outside editors! Yes I can do it. Yes I would do it. I just want to see them succeed.

but I think that's why I loved this book so much
Beware, possible spoilers ahead!Overall Rating: ☆☆☆☆4/5 Stars. I basically read this book in one sitting. I was captivated by this book. There's just something about dark romances that I'm obsessed with. I couldn't put this book down and I can't wait to stick my nose into the next one.TW: Abuse, sexual abuse, kidnapping, rape and murder.I'm not going to lie, this book is very similar to Tears Of Tess, but I think that's why I loved this book so much. I finally found a dark romance that's close to what I already love.Plot Rating: ☆☆☆☆Seeing as this book is similar to my all-time favorite series, I love the plot.Pearl, aka Button, gets kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery. She's sold to a monster called Bones. She's made to do despicable things with him. That is, until she's "saved" by Crow. Crow is almost like Bones, but better.Obviously, they have more attraction to each other or there wouldn't be a story.Character Rating: ☆☆☆☆☆I love Pearl. She's such a strong character and she won't let anyone break her. I love that there's such a strong main character. And I love that even though her body's been through so much, she's able to find such enjoyment with Crow.Crow is the just the person that she needs. He's definitely hiding something and I'm eager to find out what it is. I can't wait to see his character grow to love Button.I hate his brother though. Cane is such a douche and I really hope either Button or Crow kills him off.Writing Style: ☆☆☆☆This is my first book I've read by PS and I really enjoyed her writing style. It was so easy to read and I never got lost or confused once. Her writing is captivating. She really knows how to keep you drawn to the book!

Dark knight
Promising start to an absolute page turner of story. I have read similar story's of this genre but some have more of an edge and this is one of themWe meet pearl a structural engineer who is having difficulties with her boyfriend Jacob. Then on a trip to patch up their Rocky relationship fate steps in and pearls life changes dramatically.Pearl is an interesting character, fierce, troubled, intelligent, a fighter.SpoilerShe is caught between a battle of crowd and bones and she is the prize.Well written with good characters and dialogue. Definitely compelling and worth a look. This book however is not an easy read and describes scenes of rape and torture in detail.I will be honest after 50 shades every man and his dog jumped on the bandwagon of s&m stories which are really boring, but in this case it is an integral part of the story and the characters dynamic.Furthermore how a man beating and abusing a woman for mural sexual gratification is deemed romantic I don't know.Definitely entertaining with plenty of room for exploring plot lines. I'm invested and want more.

Lovely and different
Bones, crow and buttons, great names for characters.Jacob is Buttons(pearls) boyfriend, he’s massively in debt. He sells her and she’s trafficked. Bones pays 3 million dollars for her, and really miss treats her, but falls for her. Crow and Caine steal her from bones, and crow tajes possession of her and gives her the cute title of buttons. Crow is having sex in exchange fir buttons. The sex is very tame and not described in any great detail, but I have loved the book and will definately jump straight to the next book, since Pearl has found out the truth about her sleazy boyfriend.

Amazing book....a must read!! 5+*
I absolutely LOVED Buttons and Lace!!! Pearl and Crow's story is amazing, I was on the edge of my seat, holding on with the many emotions I was feeling reading this book...I just could not put the book down. I will most definitely be reading more books from Penelope Sky....can't wait to start the next book in the series. Definite recommend from me.

Messed up book, human trafficking isnt sexy
This book is totally messed up. The author is trying to make a love story out of human trafficking, rape, abuse and violence and some of the stuff written in this is so cringe worthy that i actually had to take a break to deal with my embarrassment before i could continue reading. For the record being sold as a sex slave then being “rescued” by someone who wants to have you as their slave and holds you captive and places a trackkng chip in you isnt romantic or sexy its messed up and illegal.

Good read
A good read but ended in a strange place, not really a cliffhanger, it was like it ended half way through a sentence. Nevertheless I’m going to read book 2
