The closest lens to a "nifty fifty" for the Nikon mirrorless camera systems
Just a short review of the NIKKOR Z 40mm F/2 I recently went on a weekend break to Lisbon and wanted to reduce my carry-on weight. I wanted to take my Nikon Z8 but most of my lens collection consisted of super zooms and a couple of F1.2 primes. These are all weighty to travel with, but also as walkaround lenses. So I picked up the 40mm just for that trip but found myself falling on love. Yes, you lose a little in light gathering compared to the faster primes, but at f2 it is pin sharp while also delivering a pleasing falloff of focus. I've found myself grabbing my camera more when going on walks or local trips as the 40mm is not only lighter but feels far less conspicuous in public places. Great little lens at a competitive price.

Nikon Brand - Every time , I wasn’t sure about - Z - 40mm - but as usual Yes - NOW 100% Sold..
Nikon Lens - Brand - Every time , wasn’t sure about Z 40mm At - first but as usual , Yes Nikon High marks. It is great , a replacement for my 50mm FX All round , the weight saving is tremendous, and a good f ..Value . Since mirrorless arrived big time , like many I wasn’t sure but. Had moved to - DSLR already - My main SLR - LOVE began when I joined , Nikon since 77, with my first Nikkormat .. But started , digital in 2007 , from digital compacts & progressed though the ranks , til now - Z7ii . And I look at third party lenses because of price , but end up with - Nikon every time . The weight , of the gear , such a saving , and F stops ..optics and coatings - I still Love - Nikon - I love this 40mm , and my 28mm , and 85mm - now saving for a - Z 20 prime .. Looking around - but I’m guessing - back to - Nikon ..

In two minds, but on balance it's a keeper.
I'm in two minds on this lens, on the positive, cheap, small, light, "artistic output", on the negative build quality, lack of sharpness, weak contrast, noticeably soft wide open, focus searching (maybe because of a lack of contrast). In summary : - If you want razor sharp images with good contrast and faultless focussing, personally I'd avoid this lens and use one of the "S" zooms that cover this range. - If you want some atmosphere to your images, where some of those negatives actually participate in that, then maybe buy it. I've decided to keep it, mainly for street photography, where the "faults" of the lens may actually improve the mood of the images I want to obtain. Also because it's exceptionally light and its smaller size will make me less obvious to the people in frame. Although the Z8 is hardly inconspicuous, regardless of the lens you stick on it !

Nice images, compact and light
I like this little lens on my Z6iii. It is light and compact for walking about the local woods and it takes great images and is just a lot of fun. Not quite the same level of detail wide open as the three-times-the-cost Z 35 1.8S but I'm finding the images to be terrific. Small point though.... I returned this model as I did not like the rough / course feel from the surface finish on the lens barrel and swapped it for the SE model (which is beautifully finished). Also added a 52mm filter plus screw on lens hood which is a perfect. Very happy with this setup and I still have my Z 24-120 4 for more detailed landscape work etc.

Cracking little lens
My 'shorty forty' is a fabulously compact and lightweight prime with an unusual focal length that I have found I love - and it's great for vertical pano shots in landscape orientation. The lens snobs sneer at it of course, because of its plastic construction and mount and the lack of VR but none of that matters to me. The 40mm f/2 is excellent value and does what it was designed to do - and depending on where I’m going, often this will be the only lens I’ll take. Highly recommended.

Brilliant lens
Brilliant lens from Nikon in Z mount and so cheap. Works great as a walk about lens just the right focal length.

A good value lens that is fully up to the standards of Nikon Z lenses. It's not a S range, but is more than adequate for anyone using a Z5, Z6 Or ZF body. I chose the 40mm lens because I have used this focal length extensively in the past and it is a good compromise between a standard and a wide angle lens.

Also Nikon - weiter so !!!
