An Excellent Concise Primer on a Key Figure in Art History
Erwin Panofsky is one of the most important art historians. Unfortunately, Panofsky's books can be dense and hard to read to anyone relatively new to the subject. If you don't have a good understanding of his methods and philosophy there isn't much hope of understanding the subject as a whole. So an easy to read, concise overview of his life, influences and methods is something of a godsend to both art history students and those of us who have a more amateur interest. The book is broken down into key areas: Panofsky's life, influences, the science of Art and Panofsky's methodologies. There are enlightening illustrations throughout that greatly aid explanation of Panofsky’s often complex theories. The final 2 chapters breakdown Panofsky's method step-by-step and apply it to actual examples. By the end of the book I had a solid basic understanding of Panofsky's method and it's importance in understanding art. This excellent overview is highly recommended as a primer to students new to Art History and anyone seeking to gain a greater insight into Art as whole.

Readable and informative
I bought this book after buying another in the series on Nietzsche. So useful to be able to find out in depth but accesible info in a short book. Read them on a plane journey and am waiting for the one on Jung.
