Perfect gift for kids!
The media could not be loaded. Bought this few weeks ago for my two year old son. He really likes and is intrigued by the train. The train does really well of pulling few carts. So it’s really strong. The durability is great as well! I would definitely recommend buying the train for your kids. It’s a great gift and great fun!It stays on the train track; it performs really well! As you can see, the train stays on the tracks while pulling some carts. It’s definitely easy to use and to install battery inside the train. My 4 year old daughter would like one too, so I might order another one for her. Overall, I really like the train. I don’t see any issues. It last longer than I expected. My kids play with it for at least an hour and it’s still going. I believe it also depends on what brand of battery you use. If you buy cheap batteries, it won’t last that long.

A Hit with My 3 y.o. Grandson
My grandson is crazy about trains, and he has several battery powered trains. He's long had magnetically linked, wooden track trains, but has graduated to plastic track, powered trains with a remote. The problem is, he can't set up the track himself as he doesn't have the motor skills and cognitive skills to plan out the geometric principles to make the track. He can, however, put together simple wooden track layouts. Linking these trains and getting them on the rails is also a challenge for him. This little engine is perfect to give his magnetically joined trains power and a renewed interest for him. It can pull four or five cars with ease and operates over an hour continuously on a single AA cell. With a simple on and off switch and single speed, its easy for young children to operate. While he still prefers his larger remote control trains, this he can set up himself and enjoy when he can't harness an adult to set up a track for him. A great addition to any wooden track train set, to move into powered motion, and a great price too.

Upgrade to brio track at a good price
We have a decent set of brio but at 5 yo my son was ready for a refresh. This battery powered train was a better price than I could find from the other brand, and I’m familiar with the quality of Hape. It’s strong! It can pull a lot of cars and go uphill. It does get stuck on one of our hills but a little push gets it through. This little engine is great if you’re tired of crawling around on your knees to manually move trains! Very fun addition to our set.

Nice battery-powered toy locomotive
This gets the job done. It's a little annoying having to use a screwdriver to change the AAA batteries, but I guess that's a safety feature to protect children, rather than a design flaw. I won't fault them for that. It occasionally loses grip when trying to pull cars behind it up a hill but, otherwise, it does pretty well. It's got forward and reverse which my toddler seems to struggle with when trying to turn it off, only to miss the OFF position and switch it into the opposite direction. Time will tell if that is something he'll overcome. Overall, it's a much cheaper, yet still functional, alternative to BRIO, which is what's most important.

Quality construction.
This is the second Hape locomotive I’ve bought for the grandkids. They work well and the kids love them.

Can pull 3 train cars up the hill
Our 5 year old grandson loves playing with the large train track at our house. We have lots of small wooden train cars for this type of track and my husband thought a battery powered engine would be a fun addition. I read the reviews on this one and knew ahead of time that the engine would pull about 3 cars up an incline. And that is what we found also. It chugs along pretty slowly, but we are not in any hurry and that gives the little guy enough time to run around to another place and change the track direction each time, which he really enjoys doing. When the 5 year old is at school the little sister plays with this too even though she is not precise enough to get it on the track most of the time. This little engine gets a work out and can handle some toddler abuse from the little person. I would recommend this and purchase again.

QUIET, great price, pulls more than other trains
The media could not be loaded. ITS VERY QUIET WHEN RUNNING!!I was pleasantly surprised with this purchase as some of the "gold standard" brand trains and this one meets and/or exceeds expectations when comparing to those!Me: I have two kiddos under the age of 3 so these trains are for fun play (vs model train track set ups), meaning they get played with rougher and in unique ways!Pros+ This is the quietest train engine by far, it's just a little hum noise. This alone will make me a repeat buyer!+ Powerful- this actually is more consistently powerful than the other brand engines that we have.+ Movement; it goes forward and backward via the switch on top+ Size comparison- similar to the regular size engines of Brio (see picture)+ Compatibility- runs smoothly on our various brands of wooden track including Brio, Melissa and Doug, and generic off brandCons- the switch to detemine directions can be difficult to get into the middle position to stop- you push the switch backwards to make it reverse, push it into the middle position to make it stop/turn off, and push it forward to make it go forward. My toddler is great at getting it to go forward and backwards but typically needs help making it stop. I attempt to demonstrate this in the video.I purchased this on prime day for near $10 and think it was a great deal at that price. Again, the quietness of the engine alone makes me a believer!

Very cute but slow and fragile
This is a darling train and my toddler is obsessed. 5 stars for product idea. However the execution is a bit soft, it’s very easy to break the wheels off and or the magnetic piece that connects other trains, and the train is so slow. We replaced 2 batteries every 4 hours of use. It takes so many batteries! I’d probably look for a sturdier one next time.
