It does have a finish on the outside, but not on the inside

Q: do I use soap and water to clean this item

I only use for floss sticks and simply wipe out

Q: What’s the best way to clean this before use? Just soap and water? I don’t want to dry out the wood.

I used a damp (with warm water) smooth towel and wiped it out then leaving it open turned it over on the towel over night to be sure it is dry before filling it. I have 3 on my counter filled with flake sea salt, pink salt and fine ground white pepper.
