Well written, interesting and unique!
We live in the south where poison ivy thrives. Other than avoiding it at all cost, I never gave it much thought. What originally peaked my interest a few years ago is that our mammoth donkey escaped the fence one night and ate an incredible amount of it from a huge vine growing nearby without any negative effects, not even a rash-covered, itchy mouth and nose. An equine-expert friend said that she had seen some horses who occasionally sought it out to munch on and so assumed that it offered something they needed at the time. I was curious but didn't easily find answers, so put it on the back burner until I saw this book. Although I haven't read the entire book I have enjoyed it and look forward to reading more. It isn't like reading a textbook. I did learn that Poison Ivy does have health benefits including relief from some of Lovey's (the donkey) issues. The jacket is lovely, which may not be a huge selling point, but who doesn't appreciate a little extra beauty to go along with a new and interesting true story?

Wonderful surprising book!
This is not a basic description of this dreaded plant, but a series of fascinating stories about how poison ivy has worked its way into history, international culture, politics, and, of course, botany. I never thought I could be so interested in one plant -- especially one that can make people miserable! The author writes with solid research, wonderful storytelling, and a wicked sense of humor. I recommend this book for anyone interested in the outdoors, natural history, and plants -- but also for young people who are developing an appreciation of nature. 5 stars for sure.

Something for everyone - lively writing uncovers many stories in which poison ivy plays a role.
I am not a botanist or a gardener, so I ordinarily would not pick up a book "about" plants. In Praise of Poison Ivy drew me in from the beautiful cover to the lively prose inside. How is a book discussing poison ivy NOT a book "about plants"? Because it is a book about the stories in which poison ivy has played a role. It is full of interesting characters, which include poison ivy, other plants, birds, etc. Each chapter develops in rich, lively storytelling, yet is chock full of information. Sanchez is rigorous in her in-depth research. She brings you new information about people you've heard of (John Smith of Jamestown, Virginia and John J. Audubon), and introduces you to characters you never knew about (like John Tradescant who maintained a "Collection of Rairites" in London). I find myself finishing each chapter, saying, "Wow, I never knew that" or "How funny/weird/amazing!" What could be better than a book which brings you such discovery and wonder at the world around you?
