Perfect for your Classroom
Got this book for my classroom when we were comparing and contrasting events that took place in history in regard to Black History. My students and I loved this book.

Awesome for kids, but more for first grade and up
This was on a list for 5-6 year olds, to help start laying the groundwork for issues like civil rights, social injustice, activism, etc. (along with several other greats like Hair Love, Kamala [woohoo] and Maya's big idea, Last Stop on Market Street) ... And it is indeed a great book to read with your kids.BUT, it's not so much a standard kids story as a kids version of real history -- which of course has such huge value, if your kids are ready for real world events. Our 6 year old (bi-racial, born in nyc, raised in detroit), even though she is whip smart, kinda started to tune out after the third page, on multiple attempts. The ideas, words, and overall narrative arc just seem to be for slightly older kids. Even 7, with first grade under her belt, might work well, but I'd advise 8. Still a great book to have in the library.

Important history!
Wonderful book. I love books about history. Especially about those who were at the forefront of historical changes, but may not be remembered as well for one reason or another. This book helps us remember Audrey, her sacrifice and her importance in ending southern segregation. Featuring beautiful illustrations by Vanessa Brantley Newton, this is a great book for kids of any age. As a bonus, there is a recipe for "Hot rolls baptized in butter" included. I can't wait to try!

Great kickstart to real life
I felt like this was an excellent book while teaching my 4 year old of the world. I did have to explain bits to her but overall the visuals really got her mind thinking about how โnot niceโ it is to act certain ways. The main character is spunky which keeps the heavy topic of the story moving and more upbeat for children. Iโm very happy we have this book and recomend it to my friends!
