These stranded embroidery threads aren't the best quality, but are amazing value for what you get. The colours are mostly pretty, though some I will probably never use. Just a point to note - it's not 50 different colours, but 2 skeins each of 25 different colours.For sewing or embroidering with them, the idea is that you cut a length, not too long, from your hand to your elbow is the longest length that is easy to use. Then depending how thick you want the stitches to be, you can unravel the length of thread into as many as six separate thinner threads. That can take a bit of patience, being cheaper thread they do tend to tangle a bit. So it gives you the option of many different thicknesses.I find two strands -- separating each length of thread into three threads -- works well for a lot of general sewing tasks. I recently hand sewed a sleeping bag out of upcycled old flannelette duvet covers and a well-past-it's-best fleece, and sewing with two strands worked great. Even better, I used the sleeping bag for a week on holiday and all the hand-sewn stitching stayed intact! If this thread worked for that with a restless sleeper and unskilled stitcher like me, it should be fine for most hand sewing tasks!

i like the variety of colours some of which are quite unusual

Probably not the best quality thread but perfectly acceptable for the price especially if you only need small amounts of different colours for a sewing project.Cheaper than buying individual colours.
