Masterpiece: Around the World in 80 Days

Enjoyable series
I am a David Tennant fan. I very much like this version of Jules Verne's story even though purists say it is too woke! This was well written, cast and acted. The sets and costumes were wonderful.

Great movie, well done
I love the acting, the casting, the locations, the script, everything about this. Even the music! It is excellently done and I have watched it many times now.

Nicely done
In some ways better than the book. The opening with the clock is almost worth the whole series.

Great Characters! Great Scenery! Great Adventures!
Ah, to recant a time period when travel across the world was possible but a challenge? Jules Verne could have not written a better story of 3 persons who hope to circumnavigate the world in 80 days or less. Each of the 3 characters has their own backstory which gets revealed deliciously in bite sized micropieces. A rich British lord type, a young daughter of a newspaper publisher looking for her big Breakthrough story and a black waiter who's backstory adds depth to the trio's adventure. Have you done a world touring adventure lately or ever? Then, sit back in your favorite chair for a thrilling A+ adventure from a trio who are like cats & dogs, but when it counts, they team up for success. Clearly, a takeoff on the original Verne story but you need the current update to our Covid-19 movie watching diet. You are guaranteed to fall in love with all of the 3 characters and that's why you will want them to travel around the world again, just for you! Buy it. Buy it now! You will thank me! This is a beautiful escape movie through the Sahara sands, the streets of Europe, the countryside of India, the wild wild West, and the streets of New York. Take the time travel back to when Jules Vernes' stories captivated his readers. There is a good reason why they liked it and why you'll like it too! Buy it now and enjoy!

Not Verne's Story but a Good One
Other than the title and the names of the major character, this series version bears no resemblance to Jules Verne's story. If you've never read the novel or seen the previous David Niven movie then proceed and enjoy but know that you're not viewing Verne. It's hard to assess this movie until one can get over feeling cheated that one isn't getting the original story. Tennant's Phileas Fogg is a completely different character and does go through a major development arc through the series. He doesn't come home with a bride but a coming to terms with a lost love. This story brings out true historical issues of the 1870's and brings the character into all new venues and humanitarian issues. I particularly appreciated Shakespeare actor John Light's version of a racist Southern; it's an ugly role and he does it very well. Besides the "American West" the 1870's Paris Commune is brought out as well as women's issues and East meets West prejudices.I suggest you watch this version; it's good. There are major actors brought into each episode but they have a role rather than Michael Todd's film cameos.

Beautiful and Brilliant. A brand new classic for your dvd library!
A quality work of filmmaking that will endure for generations. The original story is reimagined wonderfully and told exquisitely despite the demands of working during the most intense time of the Covid era. Every actor gives a superlative, captivating performance. As is often the case in Tennant's best work, pathos and drama are tempered with comedic touches that blend in perfectly. And for some viewers, perhaps an ambiguous 'easter egg' here and there... A certain character with a very pleasing name wears an exquisite blue dress that is emblematic of the incredible costume work throughout (Phileas' delicious suits are deserving of individual Baftas!)I grew up with parents that were faithful Masterpiece Theater fans and treated a quality night of television as an 'event.' Lights went out, popcorn was made, sofa strewn with pillows and blankets. They didn't get along very well normally, but on 'movie nights' we really felt like a family. They both would have loved this new beautiful classic; whenever I teared up a little of it was from knowing they couldn't experience watching it.I am very much looking forward to an announcement regarding the U.S. Blu Ray edition of this before too much longer. We could really use it over here.
