A White Heron by Sarah Orne Jewett ranks among the best short stories I've ever read. It has simplicity of style, an environmental message decades and decades before that was a popular theme and a clean choice of words that leaves a mark on your heart. Orne Jewett writes a story that holds its own with the best of short story writers, such as Bierce, Fitzgerald and Cather. A must read for short story lovers- the perfect short story.

I was touched by several of these short stories. The writer evokes a keen sense of place and has, I believe, good insight into her characters. I enjoyed reading about a different place and time from one that I know. I will reread this book at some point.

This is a carefully written piece that has characters defined by their environment and behavior. It instructs the reader in the matter of the current threat to the survival of civilization in a simple, beautiful way.

This book is a real gem. I got it for my son's home school lit/comp. course and I'm so glad I found it. This is quality writing; wonderful stories!

Well formulated short stories looking into an era of sails, coastal lives and living. The relationships are the most interesting with good detail into the day to day of a simpler life.
