First off, the product is well crafted, with sturdy pieces and looks great. Even the keys which look small in the description are actually pretty beefy. Also, there's nothing else out there can do this very specific application, which is to lock (by key, not just an interior latch) a barn door that's butting up to a wall, or another door. That being said, this installation is not for the faint of heart! I first read the horror stories in the reviews and knew I needed to get the right tools, take my time and practice. For this I used mainly a plunge router and caliper (for measuring), along with the usual set of drill/drivers, wood clamps, extra wood, marking pens, etc. You may need a hacksaw or angle grinder to shorten the metal flat turning shaft, as it comes long to adjust for door thicknesses. I've never used a plunge router with mortising bit before but I decided to learn and bought a cheap set from the local chain budget tool store just for this task. Perhaps you can rent, borrow or get used. You need to make a 2.25" plunge cut so the mortising bit needs to be long enough. Then I practiced on a piece of 2x8 as shown in the photos. Don't even bother looking at the single sheet instructions, it will just confuse you. Watch all the videos you can find about plunge routing mortises. As for the product, the quality is excellent, and not just for the price. I'd pay double for the same product, but the seller should really warn buyers to have them professionally installed or post a video on a how to.

It's too big for interior doors. These are for exterior doors only despite what the image and text implies. Unfortunately I'm stuck with them now.

Quality product and quick delivery

We installed the lock on our barn door, which is our door into the upstairs area to our home, the basement apartment is rented to a tenant. We still have a locked main outside door on the shared entry to our home. After installing the lock on the barn door, the key is required to be in the lock, if you want to bolt it from the inside. Therefore you are unable to bolt it from the inside without the key in the outside, and once bolted, you are unable to remove the key, so basically why would you lock it from the inside. Did we install it incorrectly? I have emailed the company so we shall see what they say.
