good for anyone with little prior knowledge
this is a good guide for anyone who knows very little about the tour de france. If you follow the race it has very little inside information that will be of any use to you. the so called tips are just stating the obvious to anyone who follows the race on the tv and will give very little added insite

First Class
An excellent book, well written by an author who is deeply immersed in his subject. A most engaging read and full of information we personally used to see the Tour de France.

Great context for viewing, excellent regions of France, not exactly cutting edge, but useful.
Recommended. Gives a feel of what it is like to be part of the event, or follow the Tour in person. From someone intimate with the Tour on the inside. The best comprehensive guide to the regions of France. A chapter on how to photograph the Tour and cycling generally. Some history. The parts that are more dated are usually interesting as first person narrative, like where he eats or stays. He’s a big Lance fan, to give you an idea of the time period. I’m not sure if there are any similar guides that are more up to date. I’ve watched A LOT of the Tour for many years, but this added a whole new dimension to my understanding, and helped me get a better feel for what the total experience is like, and context to my viewing. I’m sure you will be glad to have read it if you go.

Good Tour planning reference
I enjoyed reading the book as a planning reference for a future trip to watch the tour. I especially liked the comments on other things to see and do in the various regions of France and as a photographer I appreciated the tips on taking pictures of the riders to memorialize the trip. I would recommend this book to build a reference library for anyone planning a trip to watch, as Bob Roll would say it, the "Tour-day-France".
