Life: World War 2: History's Greatest Conflict in Pictures

Not impressed
This is supposed to be a book - one would imagine - with all sorts of images depicting the conflict, but this is where Life fails in its mission. There are plenty of images of the war, but very few of actual combat or the shots of action many looking at this book would likely hope to find. They are absent. There are the typical Frank Capra shots from D-Day, of course, but that is cliche and there should be more photographs in the Life archive - and there definitely are - that could speak to the awful nature of war. The organisation of the book is odd too. It's divided up into theatres along a timeframe that just doesn't make sense. To illustrate 1941 coveres Yugoslavia and later the USSR and, even with commentary next to the images, one never really understands what is happening or why these sections are put together this way. There is no coherent story being told (at least I can't find one). This book would be better if they divided it up by theatres and then did them in chronological order and at that actually put in decisive battles WITH the combat footage needed to call this a war book. As it is the book is anything but a war book. I cannot recommend this book at all.

Great
I'm an English teacher and we do a research project on japan and the US during WWII. this was a great source for students. I even have students in study hall want to read through it. They enjoy the photos and writing combined.

Plenty of historical pictures
Awfully big and bulky. Good information though

This is an excellent reference book
This is an excellent reference book. It gives a step by step history of WW2 with interesting and varied pictures. I bought it for my 15 year old grandson to enhance his school studies on that subject. He finds it both helpful and insightful.

good reading for a younger person who will be receiving this book for Christmas about the many sacrifices these men and theirfamilies make to keep this country safe. They were proud to serve.

Nice Overall Picture
This is a good book to have if you want an overall picture of what went on during the war without digging in too deep. I believe that LIFE came out with 33 books covering various arenas of World War 2. But that is if you have the time and inclination to read through all of them.
