Q: Is this any good and quiet

I brought this as a gift but I haven't had any complaints.

Q: Hi. Never used one before, is the process fairly easy for a novice? Is it easy to get wrong and completely mess up paintwork? Thanks

Just do a little research online on how best use it and u will be fine. Pretty easy to use

Q: Hello. Before I buy this, is it fairly easy to tell, by colour, which sponge/pad is the hardest/softest ? I wouldn't want to start with the wrong one.

I use the red one first then the black one. I find the cream colour one a bit harsh to the touch. This is my own opinion.

Q: An I use a 3 inch backing plate in this machine

This kit comes with a 5 inch and a 6 inch backing plate. The backing plates screw onto the output shaft. The output shaft protrudes slightly from a plastic protective cover. A 3 inch backing plate would fit but it would be smaller than the protective cover. Therefore the advantage of a smaller backing plate ie getting into smaller areas would be lost due to the larger protective cover. I hope this makes sense.
