Q: what does thickened bottom mean?

What thickened bottom? There is no thick aluminum or copper plate on the bottom to evenly spread the heat, like your regular frying pan. Nope. The bottom and the side wall of the pot is formed from one piece of stainless steel of the same thickness.

Q: is there any special hook up to distill water? the instructions are for various types of alcohol distillates but nothing about distilling water

No, there is no special hook ups other than what comes with it. Fill the main container with water you need to distill. Attach lid, make sure it seals, set up a cooling pot beside still but not on heat. Fill cooling pot with cold water. Put pump in it, hook hose from pump to bottom inlet of coil cone, then another hose piece from top inlet of coil cone back into cooling pot. Attach another piece of hose from coils to collection jug for clean distilled water to drip into. You will find the cooling pots water gets hot very fast, it works best if you can keep it cool.

If your electric stove is an electric ceramic stove, it is recommended not to use this Water Alcohol Still on the electric ceramic stove.
