Very powerful poems. But not for the average lover of poems.
Most people look for poetry to be full of love and beauty which they will not find here unless they look real hard. The lady has some remarkable wording and even some of the lines stand on their own with nothing more added. If you can read something and appreciate even parts of it then you have accomplished a feat scorned by many others. Her poems are based on Lesbian relationships which would go against the grain of most of the people I know, but I read a few selected works from a web site and was entranced by her ability to weave some very pretty phrases. That is the reason I ordered two of her books. This and another.Since I have read the books they are now destined for my local Library. And I can guarantee that my local Library will dispose of them as fast as possible. I checked first to see if I could get them there, but in the entire area not even one copy existed.

Came not completely new looking?
It is quite a nice read however, as seen in the photos there were some problems with the side of the book. It came like that and I wasn’t expecting this. Took off one star for that

one of my guardian ancestors
I stopped smoking when Audre Lorde died of cancer on November 17, 1992, the day Rebecca Walker turned 23. I had taken women's studies at the graduate level at my alma mater, that spring, and I began to read a lot of work by women authors, especially Alice Walker, who wrote, "My Daughter Smokes," an essay that got her own daughter to stop smoking cigarettes in her teens. I estimate I read that essay before Audre died. My favorite choreographer, Kenneth MacMillan, who also smoked, as Audre did, died of a sudden heart attack, while backstage reviving his ballet, "Mayerling," just three weeks prior. I only recently found out about Audre dying at that time, too, so I am getting her work to read, too.

A beautiful voice
I bought this for my daughter who loves poetry. Despite multiple courses in poetry she had never learned of Audre Lorde. She is a black, civil rights activist, feminist poet who dedicated her creative work to addressing these injustices.

Clear, strong poetry from a remarkable woman
Audre has been a favorite of mine for years. My favorite poetry of hers addresses fear, courage and strength. She is not afraid to tackle tough subjects. She is also not so abstract as to be completely unreadable, but manages to get her message across beautifully.

It’s okay
Great book but I ordered wrong format - would have preferred hardcover or first edition. Saying that the paperback was a little worn looking - supposedly new. Anyway I would order from this company as was my mistake.

love the poetry, hate the idea
I love Audre Lorde's poetry and thought getting this book would be a good idea. I wish I got all the books separate. Idk, there is something to having individual books I like A LOT more.
