Cuts clean. It does unravel if you try by teasing the end. Wax give smooth end. To finish project you can melt end of lace.

It is definitely braided, not twisted!

Q: does waxed thread have two strands

About 10 thin threads are tightly bound into ONE waxed strong strand. The ONE waxed strand stays put together perfectly (no unraveling) you CAN NOT separate into 2 strands. It threads and holds perfectly together.

Q: Can this be used to repair sails on a vintage ship

It's strong, but I don't know if it is 30 mph wind strong. I do know that you can buy kevlar thread that is probably stronger.
