long and messy set up process
I was super excited to try out this product because of the price and the fact that you got two bricks in one package. I have a 20 gallon vertical terrarium for my crested gecko and I usually to to fill the bottom 3-5 inches with substrate. One brick easily filled the bottom up a good amount but if it is packed too tight it will hold water and get smelly and mushy. However, the process of expanding and drying before putting the substrate in my terrarium was exhausting. It takes about 40+ minutes for the entire brick to expand then you have to wring out all the excess water which is super messy and took a ridiculous amount of time. After that its best to let the substrate air out by spreading it out no more than an inch deep. I happened to do this on a rainy day so I couldn't put it out in the sun which would have made the process go by much faster so I just let it sit overnight. Overall, it took me three days to expand, dry out, and move the substrate into my terrarium. One benefit though is that it keeps humidity levels high.

Horrid chemical stench!
I received this in a timely manner and I have ordered this brand for years. But I was greatly disappointed when I add water to the product and a horrid oil chemical smell came out! Extremely toxic smelling! I will be returning and going through Zoo meds website instead.

Used on plants
Product worked fine just as directed. I used this product in planters, just soaked the brick for about 30 min, mixed with some regular soil and fertilizer. Plants are happier than ever.

The occasional bad brick
I've been using this product for years. Sometimes you get a brick that doesn't dissolve correctly or doesn't quite cover the bottom of the tank. The last 4 bricks I received did this. I had to try and break it up by hand after letting it soak for the recommended time, then it came out muddy instead of moist and didn't cover the whole tank. Hopefully my next shipment will be better.

Good but messy
I bought it for my turtle. Is works great because it allows my turtle to burrow. However, it is a mess. It gets all over the turtle's food, water and on him. I have to clean him up everyday. Have to constantly change the water. Also to prepare it, is really messy. You have to soak it water for 30 minutes. Then you have to take a little at a time and squeeze the water out by hand, which takes about 2 hours, then you have to let it dry. I put it in my little guy's aquarium and the humidity reached a dangerous level. Had to dry it out and put it back. In all, preparation is about 24 hours. Not a good idea for now. If you have a large aquarium where you can seperate it from one side of the aquarium that it's great.

A little smelly...
It's a little smelly. Like gas or kerosene. Maybe it's just me. I left it on the sun for 2 days after soaking and I mixed it with some washed sand for my tortoises. Not sure if it's the best fit for them. They like dryness and it's pretty powdery and stringy when dry. When they track it through their water dish is absorbs all the water so I really have to keep an eye on that. It did fluff up well. I might add another review after I see how it goes.

Excellent quality and easy set up
Got this product for a rescued snail. In a bucket, I added 4 liters of warm water to one of the blocks and see I'll have enough material for a few months. Getting it ready was easy. As it takes on water just scrape off the loosend dirt around the block to expose the hard center underneath and that'll take on water as well. Took under 25 minutes for the whole block to take on water. It's cold now and my patio doesn't get a lot of sun anymore, so after ringing out the product with my hands (take a handful of the substrate and squeeze, it isn't hard) and placing it into a large, thick trash bag, I blow dried it for 15 to 20 minutes until it was just damp enough for the enclosure.Turbo is a happy camper now. :)There are reviews about how messy it is and well...it's dirt. I personally didn't have a problem with it and had very little to clean up. Patience and carefulness is key. I was done in about an hour. To the seller: many thanks!

Perfect for my hermit crabs will buy again
This is the best product I have found for my hermit crabs. I like these Because You observe them in water and it gets the cage the perfect amount of humidity. The bad stuff it's really hard to work with after you sprayed it because it sticks to everything and then the bottom layers don't get wet
