Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: The Complete Second Season (Marvel)

A strong second season (prior season spoilers)
+++Warning, this contains spoilers from season one, but no major season two spoilers+++The second season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has a lot going on. One of the main arcs is the fallout from the reveal (In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which occurred at the end of the first season) that HYDRA had infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. and that Ward was a double agent. There are a bunch of really good recurring characters in the Hydra storyline including Reed Diamond (playing Werner Reinhardt / Daniel Whitehall) and Adrian Pasdar (from the series Heroes) as major Glenn Talbot. Then, there is a major story arc involving Skye and her father (played by Twin Peaks' Kyle MacLachlan), which ties into the Inhumans storyline (and brings in many great recurring actors such as Dichen Lachman and Luke Mitchell. Then, there are the tie-ins to the movies that were released during the second season, primarily, Avenger's Age of Ultron, and a loose tie-in with Guardians of the Galaxy, which reveals the race of the blue-skinned alien that we saw in season one and again in season two. Jamie Alexander makes another appearance as Lady Sif, and Cobie Smulders makes an appearance as Maria Hill. The two main additions to the regular cast are Nick Blood as Lance Hunter and Adrianne Palicki as Bobbi Morse. Hailey Atwell also reprises her role as Agent Carter for a cameo in the season premiere. As far as the blu-ray set goes, it is a MOD set that is an Amazon exclusive. Thankfully, it is still priced reasonably well, so if you prefer physical media to streaming, you can get it on blu-ray. Just be aware, that after the second season, Amazon stopped the exclusive manufacturing, and to get the show on blu-ray you have to find an imported version. The final two seasons were not released on blu-ray or DVD in any mass format and so the only way to get them is to find a bootleg version (if you want one of those). So, it is not easy to keep a collection together, so if that is a big deal to you, then you may want to just stream it. The second-season blu-ray set is very light on extras. Just deleted scenes and a blooper reel.Overall, the season is very good. While it does still have tie-ins to the MCU movies, the show really does start to stand on its own this season. Of course, as the seasons go on the show becomes less tied in with the movie, and is not "filler" to get from movie to movie as it seemed to be in season one. The acting and writing are both very good, and even though many of the cast members like Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker, and Elizabeth Henstridge were still relatively new (at least in major TV roles), they do some of the best work in the show. And, Ming-Na Wen is always awesome. Of course, the Marvel Universe is basically one long (and large) intertwined story, and the show very much fits into that, but it also tells a good stand-alone story that is definitely worth watching.

Excellent television
Life in the Marvel Universe is never easy.It is fraught with danger from the weird and REALLY weird; its heroes and heroines are often conflicted and their lives are more akin to a roller coaster ride than a pleasant drive to grandma's house for Sunday dinner. That pretty much sums up Season Two of "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." In this season the erstwhile men and women who are sworn to protect just about everyone must dodge government agents and the military - who are convinced they are terrorists - and do battle with villains ranging from the truly evil masters of HYDRA to "InHumans" with strange powers. Along the way they must also try to get along with each other, which isn't as easy as it sounds, and adjust to new team members.Oh, and they must also forge alliances with people who have betrayed them in the past in order to accomplish their missions. The result: Excellent television.Season Two was enlivened by a host of top-tier guest stars including Edward James Olmos and Lucy Lawless as well as Maya Stojan, Kyle MacLachlan and Dichen Lachman. MacLachlan shone particularly bright as the erratic - and occasionally psychotic - father of Agent Skye. Alternately frightening and tender, he was a delight to watch as he went through a series of mood changes. No plot spoilers here, but I will say that there are some wonderful - and completely unexpected - twists in the season-long narrative. As always, the special effects are extremely well done, the acting top notch, and the scripts leavened with just the right amount of action and sly humor. The fight scenes - especially those featuring Chloe Bennett (who plays Skye), Ming-na Wen (as Agent Melinda May), and Adrianne Palicki (as Agent Barbara "Bobbi" Morse) - are spectacular. Marvel is famous for having strong female characters and "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." is no exception to that rule: In fact, it might be the only show on American television with an equal number of strong female and male characters. At the risk of repeating myself, this is excellent television.

Third season looks, sounds nice, terrific plot not much in the way of extras.
The second season of Agents finds the team dealing with the aftermath of Hydra’s take over of Shield from within and a surprise turn coat who takes the second season (and later third and fourth) in unexpected directions. The second season Blu-ray looks better to my eyes than the streaming version of the show with better depth, detail and less compression issues. The audio sounds terrific as well. Subtitles are only in English. This is where Disney/Marvel started getting cheap. While the A/V presentation is very nice, we don’t get any special features despite the fact that there were some podcasts and other items that could have been added. It would have added a bit to the cost or perhaps it’s because sales didn’t justify it but, either way, I personally like these occasion swag because they can, when done well, provide insight and make you see the episodes in a new way.We do get bloopers and deleted scenes which is better than nothing I suppose. The second season of “Agents” remains a terrific fun ride and the series found it’s groove very quickly with the second season. No complaints about the writing/direction/performance of the show.Highly recommended.

Different than season one, in good and bad ways
I loved season one. The proposal of a rag tag SHIELD team solving mysteries on a tricked out plane sounded good to me. Once the events of Captain America The Winter Soldier happened, the show changed to accommodate that plot line, and with it, it lost something. When season two starts there are a lot of new faces. While Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood are great additions, the others are iffy, and get disposed of fairly quickly. The personal stories are problematic as well. As much as I like Kyle McLachlan, the whole story with Skye's family gets boring really fast, particularly because it doesn't sustain throughout most of the 22 episode season. On the other hand, towards the end, after the required crossover episode to introduce Age of Ultron, when Edward James Olmos shows up, it becomes a better show. The politics inside SHIELD are pretty interesting to me, and that thread is never boring. Other great guests throughout the season include Blair Underwood and Reed Diamond. I think they dialed down the references to the MCU this season. All you get in terms of tie ins this season is a brief appearance from Maria Hill to set up Avengers 2. The two biggest drawbacks with the Blu-ray edition are the lack of extras, there are only a few deleted scenes and a blooper reel, and the lack of a play all option on the discs, which means you have to press buttons every 43 minutes, which is not practical. Looks and sounds fantastic.

Marvel's TV slow-burner now hitting it's stride. A fantastic ride..
This series is ABC's little gem- a slow burner during series 1, this is now set in post Captain America Winter Soldier and is now really hitting it's stride. Without revealing any plot, this season is darker and more brutal at times but it is rewarding if you put in the time. There are nods-a-plenty to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and even some hook-ins at times with it being dependant on it's big screen brother. My wife is now a fan and we are watching it together. It says something of the quality when you are actively waiting for the next episode or discussing the finale and what is happening in the next season. As a viewer you can "dip in", but the best way is to start from the beginning as there are some story arcs that run through the seasons.Like I mentioned, a "slow burner", but stick with it - it's worth it!

A must-have!
The series complements the established Marvel Cinematic Universe story arcs. The audience gets a glimpse of Agent Phil Coulson's backstory further and the other characters' as well. Each episode becomes more interesting with the revelation on Skye's/Daisy's parentage. With devious schemes and counter-maneuvers, it made and certified ex-S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Grant Ward as one of the most hateful villains in television history. The second season definitely solidifies the cast members' characterizations of their individual roles. The video quality of the episodes in this edition does not differ from the first season. Surprisingly, the audio quality is way much better than the one in MCU movies on Disney-released blu-rays. The only caveat to the otherwise superb blu-ray set is the limited special features since it only includes bloopers and deleted scenes.

Brilliant, but shame about the limited menu options.
Great show which fits in superbly within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it's a shame about the paucity of extra features and, unlike the first season, the lack of a Play All or Season Play option. As such, it's a bit annoying going through the anti-piracy menu before returning to the main menu to select the next episode. If it weren't for the limited menu options and lack of extra features, this would be an automatic five stars.
