You want the shoot to be growing roots and all which means after your last frost or freeze time. It should work then. Try three or four and hope to get at least one to root out. placing growth hormone on the cut should help. Good luck.

Will this work on Bamboo

We do not encourage you to try this air layering propagation kit on bamboo. Not all bamboo species can be propagated by cutting. Most bamboos grow fast and their stems become lignified quickly. It is difficult to produce adventitious buds by cutting. The mother bamboo was basically transplanted in propagation. Our product works on both indoor and outdoor plants like roses, climbers, fig trees, magnolia, camellias. Wish you a good gardening time.

Will this work on ocotillo cactus?

Hi. I am not really sure. Firstly, I don't know if cactus roots the same way woody plants do. Secondly, I guess it may depend on how thick the cactus would be if you stripped away some tissue, so I don't know for sure, but my guess is that if it is thicker than 1/2", the product that i purchased, which is designed for stems with a maximum of 1/2", won't work.

I am uncertain if you can cut a stem and then put it in the ball to grow new roots, but I suspect it would work with many plants such as roses and forsythia. I would place the ball where it would remain warm with partial sun and in a cup or glass so you can easily keep the medium wet. The balls are made for air layering as follows: Select a near vertical branch of the parent bush/tree and take a sharp knife to make two cuts around the limb about 1" from each other. Carefully remove all of the bark between the two cuts creating an open wound. I put a rooting stimulant (rooting powder or gel) on the open wound to encourage faster root growth. Mix your potting soil and sphagnum moss, wetting it heavily then pack it into each half of the plastic rooting ball. Secure the ball with the larger openings facing up! Snap the ball over the wound then fasten with the zip ties. The rubber bands work, but rot quickly, though they can secure the ball to the stem. Add water regularly to keep the medium moist. Wait patiently (sometimes for as long as a couple of months) while the plant begins to grow roots in the medium. With some plants you will see roots in as little as a week, with others it will be significantly longer. When roots are visible (or you have no more patience) remove the ball carefully by snipping the zip ties and gently look through the medium for roots. If roots are clearly visible cut the stem of the branch below the ball and, after removing the ball, plant the forming root ball in a pot with fresh potting medium, being careful to keep as much of the original rooting medium around the new roots to avoid shocking or damaging them. I once used roughly the same method successfully on an ancient wild rose using a plastic baggie (perhaps 40+ years ago), but the plastic spheres should work better and more conveniently. I would suggest using the internet to find a University horticultural department with better instructions than my own. Good luck!

Coolest thing - great on roses and fruit trees!

Love these and will buy more. Mom have made several new rose bushes for her garden andI have used at my house for fruit trees! Works great and so easy to tell when ready to cut and transplant.

A fun gardening experiment

I bought this air lane propagation kit as an experiment to see how far I can push my self. I was surprised with how great of qualities the bulbs were. They were also super easy to use. I may have not done everything right on the first time, but knowing I can be able to reuse them again this spring has me super excited to try again.

Good quality, but finger strength needed.

Good product. Wasn’t successful with my air layering, but I think it was user error on the technique not the pods. My only slight gripe is that it’s hard to clip them closed. One you get it they are tough to unclip which is ok, because you don’t want them inadvertently opening and losing all the moisture. If you don’t have strong hands/fingers you will definitely struggle. Quality is good. I left some out on the trees all winter and I’m now reusing them. Only one broke when I redid them.

Good size for propagation , but as far as them staying closed on their own. No. You need to really pack in thw soil, so when you wrap them around the branch, they are under a little pressure to pop open. I couldn't even get them to pop close. It was a hassle once they were filled. Good thing they included zip ties
