Taking Care of Myself2: for Teenagers and Young Adults with ASD

Worth the money, and more than worth the money. Savings on tylenol alone, when working with your spectrum child.
Gave this to my 10 year old, with Aspergers. She reads a chapter a week, takes notes, and works on what she learned for a month. She's on her third read through (11 now), and we still find it useful to have around.Look, if you have a child on the spectrum, you know this already; early life skills are HARD for them. What we pick up through social osmosis, they have to work for. And sometimes it seems (to us AND them) that there just isn't a good starting place. For them, especially as a child, their brains aren't accustomed to making a "system" out of every little thing like they will later in life. This book, for 10 and above, is a tool that works great IF you help them make a plan to get the most out of it. Don't expect to give it to a child on the spectrum and magically have the book start imparting skills and improving their life. You'll have to help them make a plan, help them repeat the actions (we taped up heavy-weight paper printed with step-by-steps for one week at a time) until they master the skill. But reading the book imparted a real sense of "I can do it myself" for our daughter, which boosted her self esteem during a time that most kids on the spectrum need it. And it helped my wife and I "see" what things must feel like for her, so that we could make a plan to help her learn things step by step. So take away what you can from it - but for the price, it saved us a LOT of paying for educational therapy and lessons on how to try and teach teens things like "wash under your arms", "remember deodorant", and "good quality bras can be worn twice, but panties only once". Little lessons like that, which most therapists will never think to tell you.

I would highly recommend this book....this is the most practical and comprehensive book of its kind....Learning the activities of daily living are vital to young people and all adults on the Autism Spectrum. The author uses an easy-to-understand format. Step by step approach to subjects from hygiene to dating. Our ASD kids grow up....this book is very helpful and important.

for higher functioning people
I returned this book as it is for higher functioning people with disabilities. I had hope that it had been similar to Mary Wrobel's first book, Taking Care of Myself... it does not meet the needs of students with severe cognitive impairments with multiple disabilities. The book is more helpful for students/people that are on the higher functioning scale of autism and other debilities.

Detailed, easy to read , written well
I got it as a gift for my cousin overseas. I don’t know much about autism but it’s big book, detailed, pictures and writing in black and white ; it is written just for American standards not universal as the sections like teaching emergency numbers , using transportation are all for USA . There is many chapters on relationships and sex. Will gift it to a school instead.Writer did spend a lot of effort on autism and how to overcome its daily obstacles .I do recommend it . Thanks
