Covers main aspects
I am new to running and using this book as a reference along with running apps to train myself. Easy to read, sample plans, it has several tips to make your run injury free and enjoyable including post run tips so that you are back again. It addresses concerns both for mind and body. A set of diagrams on stretching etc could have made it better. but nota deal breaker.

A pure Marathon Book
Everything you need to know about a Marathon is in this book. The author has explained how a novice can take up running, how he can progress. No fancy stuff, a simple, easy and evidence based book. Do not expect any magic workout or diet that will make you a marathoner. Instead the book gives a realistic approach that one must follow in order to endure this magical distance.Bonus is, you get many training plans based on your current level.

Below Average Book with complete lack of expertise
It's a very average book. The training plans in the book are already available online. This book fails to take a systematic approach on how to start and improve on running. The author just goes on and on about himself and quotes randomly his fellow coaches. Things like nutrition, pre-post run exercises, motivation are discussed in a very generic way and lacks the expertise of a good coach. For the price it's a below average book.

No training guidance!
Not a great book as it was advertised. A lot of high end examples distracts you when you are looking for serious plan. No systematic plan. General guidelines that you can easily get on internet. Not recommended if you want some help that make you run. However, it gives you good Marathon vocabulary to boast about marathon.

Not a great read
Not a great read. Not definitely ultimate guide as referred for runners. Could have named my experience in running marathons.

Helped me to run a sub-4 marathon!
Awesome book. It explains everything about marathon running in an easy but scientific way with a lot of references and examples. Instead of paying a huge amount of money for a personal coach, I just read the book, picked one of his training programs and ran my first marathon in less than 4 hours. Thanks Hal!!

Great advice!
Very practical advice for marathoners of all levels. An easy read with running terminology explained in a simple manner. Perhaps the next edition could include a chapter on older marathoners, given the increasing age of such runners.

well written, lots of good information
I'm planning to run the Milton Keynes marathon next year, so I bought this book to help me prepare. The book is a joy to read, the author's love of running really shows. The information on training, nutrition, pre-race preparation, running the race and recovering afterwards is excellent. I particularly like the way the author draws on the knowledge of other coaches and various experts in addition to his own considerable experience.I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to run a marathon, whether it's your first one or you've run a few already.
