an incredibly invaluable resource
I've had Parkinson's for a few years now, and, at age 51, have the ignoble distinction of being among those deemed "early onset." This book was among the first I bought when I was diagnosed, and stayed in the pile of books doctors and medical associations were gracious and generous enough to give me. Once I got to it, however, I quickly realized it is among the best. Descriptions, definitions, explanations... All are presented in clear, straightforward, easy-to-understand language, all are thorough without getting long-winded, and all are compassionate without being sappy or unrealistically "everything will be great." I appreciate the even-handedness of both her allopathic and holistic treatment descriptions, not offering much in the way of criticism nor over-the-top praise, just presenting the many options available. In glancing through the table of contents as i write this, to refresh my memory, i find it hard to really encapsulate this book, it is so packed with useful information. Like, how to find a great doctor. Suffice it to say that, from my experience and my belief in balancing both western and alternative medicine, this book is invaluable, for patient, friends, and family.

This is my go to book on Parkinson's, so much information in this book.. I think everyone should try to get this book, it is not only a good read, but a good book to reference every so often, Very easy to read and understand. My blessings to all the other Parkie's and their caregivers, so far I have been lucky, I can still do most everything, well now I am almost 72 and have Parkinson's so some of the stuff that I could do in my 20's or 30's I am a little slower, but not because of Parkie, I fight him everyday with meds, postive attitude and exercise. Great book

Good for general info.
It DOES gives a lot of info that my Dr. never told me or I didn't have the sense to ask. When you have a new symptom, you can look it up. I t also gives details that are helpful. I would like an update tho since some new meds have come into the market since it was published.

A good full first-hand book about Parkinson's disease
Actually, I bought the book 5 years ago, but first now read it, and this after my wife from a doctor was told suffering from the Parkinson’s disease. My wife went to a neurologist, after during years visiting many health doctors especially concerning headache. When my wife was back and told that the neurologist had told her suffering from the Parkinson’s disease, I realized “of course, I think that the doctor may right”. And then went to this and other books. The book is good to read as an informative helping book. Among other it contains many interesting personal cases, many about rather young persons, compared to normally first hit after the age of 60. And by these cases learning about the different disease problems, as shaking hand, freezing to the floor, or as one of the book authors suddenly hit by heat feeling wile the other sometimes hit by freezing.Good by first in the book explaining the disease, by how in the brain, for som persons starts when they get older, and how the managing machine in the brain, managing arm movements and much more, are getting to little Dopamine, for sending messages. First after around 70% to little Dopamine produced then the daily problems, as stand up when leaving bed, or chair, and so on, results in persons visiting doctors. And ten often misinformed, like being told caused by age. Besides the book is good by writing about conventional treatment and alternative treatment. The book is printed in 2003, so some will tell it not up to date, but actually from specialist in the disease, there are much opposite views, among other whether vitamins, minerals or drugs help, or not. After my reading in around 15 books about the disease, I will say that vitamins and herbs can help much.

Save your money
I bought this book because of a recommendation of a friend. I have Parkinson's and so does the friend who recommended it. The first part of the book mainly descibes what Parkinson's is and how to deal with it. I was very disappointed when it got to the holistic part. If I took every supplement the recommened I would constantly be poping pills all day long. I was very disappointed especially since a friend told me how great it was. Save your money.

Lots of very good information in this book
Lots of very good information in this book. The different medications that help with the different conditions that arise as the Parkinson's progresses. Plus the side effects that can occur with the different medication is very helpful. It helps you to ask your specialist whether a different line of medications would help with your Parkinson's, or if something newer has been developed. As this book is already 10 years old, I am sure that there are many different things today that can be taken to slow the progression of this disease.Would recommend this book for new diagnosed PD patients.Paulette

This is a great book to browse for info and questions onP.D. I've given it to friends, family and caregivers as a resource as I don't always want to talk about my disease the whole time, when we have short visits. They appreciate this book as it's written so clearly and full of helpful information and tips.
