The Last Star: The Final Book of The 5th Wave

Nail biting conclusion to a great trilogy!
The Last Star picks up right where The Infinite Sea left off, Ringer, newly enhanced with the 12th system, has run away from Camp Haven after Teacups death while the rest of the gang (Cassie, Evan, Ben, Sam, Poundcake and Megan) are holed up in the dead Silencer, Grace's safe house. Each side is plotting their next move. After learning that the Others have a massive air strike planned to take out all major cities in the world in four days time, the pressure is on to not only reunite with Ringer and Teacup (unaware of her death) but to also plan an attack on the mothership to blow it up before it has the chance to blow up the world. Easy peasy right? Not quite. Of course the gang runs into all sorts of trouble, Silencers, capture, missile strikes, deception and more along the way. Will Cassie and her gang of misfits be able to stop the release of a tidal wave of bombs? Or will time run out before they are able to accomplish their mission? And who will they loose along the way?Overall, I think Rick Yancey really did all the characters justice in the nail biting conclusion to this trilogy. All the characters sub plots were well thought out and developed, true to their personality and identity. His writing style is so rich in detail and fluid, it was such a naturally easy and engaging read. What I really enjoyed about this read was that everything wasn't neatly wrapped up in a little bow and delivered to the reader. It was harsh and painful at times, but was honest and believable. Life doesn't get wrapped up neatly in 350 pages and this novel really captured that truth. If you haven't finished the book and plan on it- don't read ahead- SPOILER ALERT!I'm not gonna lie and say I was thrilled that Cassie died in the end, or pretend that it wasn't a major blow when reading the book, but I understand enough to know that it had to happen. Once she told Ringer goodbye and to take care of Sam, I knew her end game and it hit me hard. Thanks for making me an emotional wreck Rick! At work no less (shhhh don't tell my boss). Deviating from a normal YA plot perspective, I felt it really did Cassies character justice that one of the main points of drama wasn't a love triangle or some star crossed (literally in the case of Evan Walker) lover angle. Sure it's there, giving the plot some added drama and points of contention but it isn't the focal point. There is no fairy tale romance in store at the end for Cassie and Evan (or Cassie and Ben). I enjoyed the last few chapters showing life with Marika, Ben, baby Cassie, Sam, and Megan. I was especially thrilled that Evan didn't die a heartless, soulless "Other" but was restored, however painful that must have been. I would have hated if our last glimpse of Evan was what Vosch made him into. Overall I felt Rick did an amazing job with this trilogy and, as always, was blown away by his superb writing style and dedication to his characters.

Bold and Heartfelt Ending!
I can’t believe how quickly trilogies come and go! This year I have finished 2 trilogies, which is very rare for me! Out of all the series I have read, The 5th Wave trilogy was very strange. It was something unique and I still feel unsure about it. These books are definitely not bad books, but for a book series so big the stories feel very small. Before I give my thoughts on the series overall, I want to share my feelings on the last book in the trilogy, The Last Star. The story picks up pretty much after the events of the Infinite Sea. It was a little while ago since I read the second book but I was quickly able to recall everything after reading the first few chapters. As I mentioned above, I am not sure how to feel about the story since very little happens for something as big as an alien invasion. My biggest problem with this book was that I did not like how it is up to the kids to save the world. I understand that a lot of the adults are dead but it doesn’t feel very realistic for a very small groups of kids to destroy the mothership and save humanity. The story revolving around kids worked really well in the first book because Cassie and Zombie were not trying to save the world. Honestly, giving Ringer, Evan, Sam, Zombie, and Cassie the impossible task of defeat the others took me out of the story. Yet, the writing was so unique and witty it kept me glued to the book. The best thing about this trilogy was the writing style and the very relatable teens in the book. I love the internal comments, especially those made by Cassie and Zombie. I found myself chuckling several times because I understood how they felt and it really made them feel human. I was a little disappointed by the scale of the book and I probably would have given it an “okay” or “ehh” review if it weren’t for the characters. The first, and biggest change, in the last book that I noticed was that every time a pov changed it had the character name underneath the chapter number! I struggled trying to understand who was talking in the first two books and this change really helped me a lot! In this book we get the pov of Ringer, Sam, Evan, Cassie, and Zombie. At first I didn’t like reading in the pov other than Cassie’s, but I got used to it as I continued to read. Each characters’ pov was fixed so that the story flowed as one story instead of several stories with different plots. They each had their different take of the situation and it was fun seeing what motivated each character and how they were able to maintain their humanity. What really changed my opinion of the book was the reactions and tone of the ending. My “ehh” turned into “Woah!” Without spoiling it, it felt hopeless and hopeful. It was very depressing but there was still a flicker of light in sea of darkness. Although I had the ending spoiled for me it was still powerful and heart breaking. The words “I am humanity” spoken by Cassie in the first book means so much in The Last Star and it was very interesting to see this theme throughout the books. Overall I found this series to be quite entertaining and very exciting, even though the books felt small in scale and the kids were only ones who could save the few humans left on the earth. The ending was not super spectacular but it does leave an emotion punch. I am a huge fan of dystopia and “end of the world” scenarios so this series was my cup of tea. I loved Ricky Yancey’s writing style and I am curious to see what he writes next!

Great reads...
This feels like a good conclusion for one of my favourite book series ever. But i would like to hear more of Evan's story. Maybe that was for the fourth book. Anyway, i really like the last part of Cassie's story, it's the story i always want to see and it gives closure and i feel like i saw a lot of the answers right there in Cassie's experience and it really adds value to the whole series in my opinion. Great job Rick! Can't wait for the fourth one.
