ObozMen's Sawtooth X Low Hiking Shoe

Excellent comfortable hiking shoe with great traction.
These shoes replaced a pair of Keen's that I have had for about 8 years. My Keens set a high bar for comfort whatever was to follow but I wanted a shoe that would not have the sole treads peel away like Keen's are prone to. My initial purchase was a size 11 which I have worn for 20+ years but I found that these shoes run small. Replacing the 11's with an 11.5 was perfect and I found the shoes to be very comfortable from that point forward. These shoes accompanied me on a vacation out west where we hit 4 of Utah's Mighty Five national parks and the north rim of the Grand Canyon. I am not a serious hiker. I do it for fun and recreation so I didn't put more than 5-7 miles per day on these shoes but I never had a issue with them. The traction on dust, gravel and slick rock was excellent and I felt very stable traversing up and down. They held me with out concern while we waited in the line for 20 minutes for a photo under Delicate Arch on a 45 degree slick rock slope. They were equally good on the dust and gravel of the North Kaibab Trail. They clean up easily and lace up firmly across my foot. Overall I am very pleased. I don't see any indications that the sole treads will separate like my Keen's so I am very optimistic.

Sawtooth X Review, better than the originals
Honestly, one of the best hiking shoes I’ve ever owned. I used to swear by Merrell Moab’s, but these are sturdier. The new version got a bad rep compared to the original Sawtooth, but imho the new version is better. For one, the Sawtooth X is a real wide. I bought a pair of the original Sawooth’s in wide and let me tell you, they are not actual wides. I believe that’s confirmed somewhere online, maybe the manufacturers website. Also, the sole of the newer version is more stable. I know people swore by the old version, but they were the only shoe I’ve ever worn that made me feel that my ankles could twist inwards. I returned the original version and got the X instead.I was a little worried at first, as they started off rather tight (even the wides). However, after a few miles and 2-3 walks in the rain, they have loosened up nicely. They have kept my feet dry despite not being waterproof. They are still a bit snug, but nothing too bad. I also use them to work out and have even ran in them fairly regularly if needed. Obviously they’re not running shoes, but in a pinch they’ve done just fine.I’d like to see a little more width in the wides, but that would probably be the only thing I’d change. Not a fan of the insole they come with but that’s an easy fix.

Comfortable Right Out of the Box
Great fit and very comfortable. My only gripe is the way it is cut near the top. When laced up the space between the eyelets gets wider and wider to the point of looking a little odd up near the ankle. I wonder if they do this to save $ due to less material needed? I prefer relatively equal distance between the eyelets all the way up. I've had shoes like this before and eventually the top eyelets will break because of the force needed to pull the two sides together.

4th pair i've owned.
4th pair i've owned. I wear them daily for work in construction. Great support comfort and durability. After wearing over a year i keep the previous pair for yard work for another year of comfort support and durability. These just look beet up do to the work I do. Love the shoes.

Quality Control Issue
I sent these back on the last possible return date because I found the black strips above the treads on the sides of the shoes were peeling off after only three weeks of wear. The strips are like a textured latex paint and the color of the material underneath is slightly lighter. That just strikes me as a quality control issue. It doesn't affect the function. I found that it took a good two weeks to break them in with daily wear in an office setting. Probably faster if you're doing a lot of hiking, but these are casual, daily drivers for me.Additionally, I found this pair to be a little narrower than the Sawtooth IIs I've worn before. That's odd to find in a pair from the same manufacturer in the same 11.5 wide size. I loosend the laces and didn't have too much trouble, other than that my little toe on one side got a little sore wearing them till the shoes broke in.

They have really gone downhill in the last couple years
The media could not be loaded. Hopefully, you watched my video showing my discrepancies about the shoes. They’ve gone downhill and they have lost what they had. That was amazing when they came out with the original shoes. I was so thoroughly impressed with the original sawtooth shoes. I have probably owned and worn out 6 pairsAmended 10-2024. I am coming back here to say again that I’m incredibly disappointed in this new model shoe and I don’t think it’s worth $20 let alone the $135. They are trying to get and the $165.for the waterproof ones. I cannot even imagine who the people are that are giving them Fair or good reviews. These shoes are awful. They are nothing like the original sawtooth. Absolutely nothing. This company should be incredibly ashamed and when they go out of business in just a few years, it will be a very sad day of greed and selfishness that made this happen. Their old shoes were my very favorite shoes on the planet and now I have to go back to some company like keen or find a different brand hiking shoe. How does this happen? How are they still in business after releasing this total junk that falls apart and is not even remotely comfortable after trying to break them in.

Great shoe
I have worn OBOZ shoes for many years, however they stopped making the Sawtooth shoe and replaced it with the SawtoothX . I need a wide shoe and the X was not wide enough and would require lacing so wide that I didn't feel good about the fit . Love OBOZ shoes but the new ones just didn't fit.

Awesome Shoes
I got a size 13 pair of these on sale for $115. Definitely worth the price. But for normal price? Nah. Wait for a sale like I did as I got them over half off.

Last forever
I hike 3 to 4 miles every day in the North Shore Mountains and usually get 2 years out of my hiking boots My last pair of these Oboz lasted 5 years and still look ok. So much so that I replace the laces and put in a new in sole and dropped them off at the local Homeless Shelter.
