THE book for the Beginning tester or SDET who has not used Java in a few years.
Let’s face it, Java is like an ocean, there’s a lot you know you need to grasp and there’s a lot you know you don’t know and have tried to learn several times before just to end up frustrated and confused, not all books convey the info in a practical and concise way. You need a book that will teach you the concepts by writing meaningful code and it not be overwhelming, THIS IS THAT BOOK!I’ve had this book on my computer since it came out. 2 weeks ago after not working in Java for 2.5yrs I decided I wanted a methodical walk into the language to refresh myself in core Java for building automation frameworks and after completing chapters 3, 4, 5, I was absolutely incredulous about how I had never tapped this source of material before now.Alan’s approach has you coding immediately and sets the principles into memory by having you write different tests to reinforce what you just read and learned. I’m telling you, anyone who takes notes as they go along, codes the lessons and the exercises will have what is needed to be more than credible to list Core Java on their resume. Java For Testers does not disappoint in its style of teaching or in its depth of Java concepts.I would recommend this book to:Anyone who’s spent years piecing together automation scripts and letting the IDE correct and change access modifiers for you but never understood why it works, and were always satisfied with, “well at least it works”, this book will take you to a new level of understanding the frameworks you’ve been building.Anyone who is simply tired of trying to learn from books who’s first chapter starts out with public static void main followed by String concatenation and “Hello World” beginning chapters.... this is a new and from what I’ve read, the best approach into the Java language that will have you writing MEANINGFUL code and understanding it like never before. And finally if you’re someone who is competent in basic aspects of automation, but some things that you don’t really use as an SDET are always coming up in interviews around Object Oriented Programming, this book takes you by the hand into the deeper learning of these Java Core concepts with coding examples and everything has additional references to help nail down the material. This book will take your career to a whole new level.

HUGE return for such a small price!
Alan is 'The Man' when it comes to learning about software test automation from the ground up. I have him to thank for giving me the resources to get up to speed on a whole new way of testing (programming and automation) and for making me a great deal more employable in the process. For tester/programmers of any level, this book is a tremendous resource and reference. In the book he lays the groundwork and good habits you will need in order to create a test suite that is maintainable and has lasting value. It's Java specific, so bear that in mind if you're currently tied to running Selenium under a different language, but many of the principles he describes can be applied in any language that Selenium supports.I cannot recommend this book and/or his video course strongly enough. If you're an old SQA dawg like I was with an interest in programming but very little practical experience, even if the thought of actually making sense of a Java IDE like Eclipse makes you tremble, jump in! There's much to learn but Alan beats a path that leads directly to creating automated tests in Java and Selenium with very little fluff or distractions. And if you persist you will get there in short order, and reach a level where you can begin to research and answer your own questions. I go back to this book again and again and always find something new to learn.Disclosure: I bought the ebook from his website and not from Amazon.

I've read numerous books on Java and Testing over the years, but this is by far the most essential one I've come across. Ideal for getting a solid grounding in Java from a QA perspective while bypassing the more traditional "learn to code" aspects to focus on what you really need from a Test perspective. I'm very tempted to make it required reading for all my Junior team members in the future.
