Mild flavor - tasty. Soothing. Anti-inflammatory and increases the mucosal lining of the gut & lungs. Protective
This product lives up to the doctor's recommendation!I attended a tutorial on herbs given by Dr. Tieranona Low Dog for doctors interested in incorporating herbal medicines into their practice. She covered history of usage, clinical trials on herbal medications, safety, interactions of herbs with other herbs, supplements and prescription medications. Dr. Low Dog started her career as an herbalist/midwife, went to medical school, became faculty at the Univ of Arizona's Integrative medical program and finally, fed up with the lack of standards for herbal use/safety in the US, started the government committee the oversees product efficacy and safety for herbal products. She is an EXCELLENT instructor.Dr. Low Dog couldn't praise marshmallow root enough. Recorded use goes all the way back to the Greeks and Hippocrates. Marshmallow root made it to Hippocrates short list. Which is probably how it acquired it's name Althea officinalis.Marshmallow root is safe - no record of safety issues in the US or Europe (which has a much longer history and more extensive use).Marshmallow root has a huge reputation as a healing herb - probably because it fights inflammation. You got inflammation, You got problems healing.Marshmallow root is a demulcent (increases mucus production especially in the gut and lungs). So, if you have gut problems like leaky gut or a gut infection where the lining of the gut is in deep trouble, marshmallow is protective because it's increasing the mucosal lining of the gut and protecting the lining of the gut. And since it's anti-inflammatory too, it will soothe the lining of the gut so hopefully, it will recover and make it's own mucus again. To prepare marshmallow root.Boiling water - high heat breaks down some of the compounds so don't boil the root or put it in near boiling water. The better temperature is to boil, then let drop to about 130 degrees and let it steep for a good long time. Anywhere from 15-20 minutes to 4 hours .Cold/room temp. water:- let steep for 4 hours or overnightThe flavor is mild and faintly root-like not green/herbal. By the end of the first cup, I liked the flavor. If felt good as it went down even though it wasn't a physical sensation. I just felt fond of it going down. Probably a placebo effect but I'll take it. The placebo effect may be the most underrated medication ever.Do I notice any healing effect on my gut infection/leaky gut (?) yet? Darn, it's only been a week! I added the marshmallow root to my regular routine of Olive Leaf extract (an antibiotic-kills Candida Albans only - leaves the rest alone) and probiotics. On the third day I had no appetite/energy, so I just drank marshmallow tea and also some golden milk (coconut milk and turmeric Extra Strength Premium Pure Organic Curcumin 95% (Turmeric Curcumin Extract) Powder - Powerful Anti-Inflammatory Antioxidant (200 grams) Natural Curcumin Supplements-also good for healing the gut) and went to bed. The next day I had a bad gut reaction (continuous diarrhea, lotsa gas. and of course the smell - it almost seemed like the gut was trying to turn itself inside out), sore muscles, fatigue and sneezing. The symptoms lasted for about 2 days then vanished abruptly. I believe this was the herxheimer reaction - if you start killing off bacteria/yeast in your gut quickly, you get these vaguely flu-like symptoms. I have more appts with doctors and I'll get their take.My reading caught up with this situation before the doctors did . It turns out coconut milk has helpful antibiotics of its own and I used almost a can of coconut cream making the golden milk . That would explain the Herxheimer reaction. So the marshmallow remains safe. You shouldn't experience gastric upset unless you drink almost a can of coconut cream in one day.Update: It's now been almost two weeks since I downed too many healthy things all at once. As I recovered from the overdose, mysteriously my energy levels have almost doubled. I was working about 3-4 hours, resting for about 2-3 hours then up and at'em again. About a week afterwards, I started working earlier in the morning and just continued with brief breaks for food throughout the day. This hasn't really happened in the last 5 years ever since I went out on medical disability. My memory and concentration also improved although not to pre-disability days. Since that time, I've discovered spirulina (a blue-green algae) also has antibiotic effects (and yes, I took it that day). I've tried to provoke the herxheimer reaction again but using golden milk, and spirulina separately without the marshmallow root & empty stomach. Nothing. So either I need to go all out again or the susceptible bugs are wiped out.Next experiment includes the following antimicrobial foodsThymeOreganoSpirulinaCoconutmarshmallow root to seal up the gut and as an anti-inflammatoryTurmeric as an anti-inflammatoryUpdate: Dec. 2017After I described my adventures with the Herxheimer reaction to my doctor, I outlined my next set of antimicrobials and my concerns - should I mix all these things together? Would they interact adversely? After that huge herxheimer reaction, it took me a week to recover my energy but my color had turned ashy-yellow again and it would take weeks to recover. I was quite worried. She just said, "these are all foods".So instead of ordering yet another round of extracts and capsules from Amazon, I raided my pantry.1 tablespoon of eachThyme-strong antimicrobialOregano-strong antimicrobialBasil - antimicrobial (don't know strength)Rosemary-antimicrobial (don't know strength)At this point, I debated over soup vs. herbal tea but decided tea would be simpler. Boil 1 cup of water, toss in crushed herbs when water boils, turn off heat. Let steep until the brew drops to drinking temperature about 130 deg. Strain and drink. Taste is surprisingly close to soup. Results - definitely kicks off a mild herxheimer reaction which lasts about 4-5 hours. Over the ensuing days, I feel really fatigued, worse than ever. Could I have knocked out some of my probiotics? Maybe, I should have waited longer before I hit myself with this, err..., soup? Oh, duh. Nevermind.Good for your Gut PopcornCoconut oil, as I have mentioned before, has antimicrobial properties. The active ingredients are: Lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid. Yes, it had three antimicrobials, not one.Spirulina: contains an antimicrobial that specifically targets yeast. Plus, it's packed with vitamins and minerals. And oddly, it's awesome on popcorn.Organic popcorn: if you have gut problems, chemicals may irritate your gut. It's hard to predict which ones will affect you, so play it safe. Feed your probiotics with fiber. Popcorn is a whole grain, not junk food. Sweet corn? Not so much.Cayenne pepper; anti-inflammatory and again, awesome on popcornSalt - use sea salt from the cleanest waters only or himalayan salt. Or just plain kosher salt.Melt 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, add 2 tablespoons of popcorn kernels to a pot with a tight fitting lid. Use high heat and shake the pot vigorously until the popping stops. Season to taste with salt, pepper, spirulina. If you're not enthused about shaking the pot, lower the heat.My self-experimentation was interrupted by the holidays but I managed to encapsulate my spirulina and worked some extra large doses into my pill scheduled. So even though I didn't actively work on my diet/supplements strangely, I came back and found myself ready to... exercise? Very strange. I stopped wanting to exercise about 15 years ago. I trudged along because of medical/employer incentives but that was it. Now, I found myself searching YouTube (blech) for some nice sedentary exercise videos.Update: Jan 2017I ran another experiment where I first, sealed the gut with marshmallow tea, then drank 2 cups of the herbal tea (see above). Luckily, I'd eaten some good-for-gut popcorn a few hours earlier. This is the second time I've used this tea, I'd drunk one cup about a month earlier. I went with two cups because I find I need about two cups of liquid to flood the gut. My reaction this time around was fairly mild. The gut produced gas and very loud gurgling noises for about 3 hours and then I went to bed. Sometime in the middle of the night, I was awakened by a surprise bowel movement. I was dismayed until I realized, this is normal, not diarrhea. So far, this time around, I haven't experienced any downside - no fatigue, sore muscles, etc...which means my herbal tea did a pretty good job the first time round. However, the gurgling continues ????? We'll just have to see what happens long term.Over the next two weeks, the gurgling continued and alas, my probiotics seemed to fall apart. I ran another internet search for treatment guidelines for Candida:You need probiotic, 4 different anti-microbials that kill yeast AND something that helps your immune systemEat 60-80 gms of high fiber carbs daily to avoid feeding the yeastSplit your probiotics and anti-microbials into two sections of the day (this made a huge difference to me: I saw results in 24 hours) to avoid killing your probiotics with your anti-microbialsBoost fiber intake with supplements - Yes, you want that 30 gms of fiber daily - really hard with the 60-80 gm limit on carbsEat foods (green vegetables) or take supplements that influence the environment in the gut to favor probioticsMy probiotics: Hardy's Greens & probiotics - a good brand but there are many good brands out thereMy anti-microbials - Hardy's Olive Leaf Extract PLUS, coconut oil & products, MCT oil Premium MCT Oil derived only from Coconut Oil - 32oz BPA free bottle | Ketogenic and Paleo diet approved ~ Non-GMO Project Verified, spirulina, lauricidin Lauricidin® Original Monolaurin Supplement 227gram 8oz jar, Silexan (purified lavender oil) Nature's Way Calm Aid Nature's Way 30 Softgels, colostrum (the clear part that is secreted before milk is produced for the calf - loaded with antimicrobials NOW Colostrum 500 mg,120 Veg Capsules, 2 cloves of fresh garlic.Note: the colostrum is loaded with monolaurin so you may not want both. I find the colostrum works quickly (and directly in the gut) whereas the monolaurin takes 7-10 days to show direct effects. My influence the gut environment: oil of oregano, ZANE HELLAS Wild Pure Greek Essential Oil of Oregano 86 Percent Minimum Carvacrol, 129 mg Carvacrol Per Serving, 1 fl oz, 30 ml, strong peppermint tea (peppermint oil is recommended as an antimicrobial - just haven't tried it).To correct my self-treatment, I needed to split my day into a probiotics/anti-microbial periods, add fresh green salads and popcorn daily and that was about it. For once, it helped that I'm diabetic and already under the 60-80gm carb limit. Things improved dramatically within 24 hours. Realizing, fiber was really key, I starting adding fiber to all my water (metamucil, yuck, then later glucomannin, less yuck). Bingo! And then... curses, another bug ambushed me and I've got a ferocious oral infection and some amoxicillin. To be updated.ConclusionsRun an internet search for "guidelines for treatment Candida"Split probiotics & antimicrobials into two treatment periods dailyUse 4 antimicrobials to defeat resistant bugsStay under 60-80 gms of carbs, especially refined carbs to avoid feeding the yeastPick a good probiotic - freshness, many species, high organism countUse supplements/foods that alter the gut environment to favor probiotics and discourage yeast. If you want to provoke the Herxheimer reaction, there are quite a few healing foods that may be helpful (fresh garlic, thyme, oregano, rosemary, basil, coconut, spirulina, sage, cinnamon, turmeric). It seems like sealing the gut is optional for some foods.Food works fast, the first 2-3 times probably has high impact afterwards it's maintenance.I debate the value of high knockout doses. They illustrate the power of the food but the ill effects maybe too strong for someone who is in extremely poor health. I would consult a doctor. Recall, 2 days of a strong Herxheimer reaction was enough to knock me back for weeks. It may be better to sneak up to the effective dose and spread the reaction over time.If you want to reduce inflammation in the gut, use marshmallow root tea on an empty stomach. Turmeric is good too. Use the golden milk 20 minutes or more after you drink the marshmallow tea. use almond/soy milk if you want to avoid the Herxheimer effect. Avoid cow's milk. Now is not the time to start guessing if you have an adverse reaction to cow's milk.Note: All these experiments with herbs and supplements sit on top of Olive Leaf Extract and Probiotics and Greens from Hardy Nutritionals (http://hardynutritionals.com). Hardy's is a Canadian supplement company. They research and perform clinical trials on their supplements. My doctor is a big fan of Hardy's. Bear in mind that all these good results are probably due to the Hardy's. Except that I started experimenting with all these supplements because the Hardy's seem stalled. I guessed that my gut infection is long standing and by now there's more than Candida albans (yeast) infecting my gut.SymptomsI only know I have a yeast infection (Candida Albicans) because I take the Olive Leaf extract from Hardy's. Olive Leaf is known to go after Candida. After about 5 weeks on olive leaf, my diarrhea (I had daily diarrhea for over two years) slowly went away. Doctors and product support specialists breathed a sigh of relief because it's all a guessing game. Since, I was in a twilight zone with the Candida barely held in check, I was able to observed what happens when you feed the yeast.Mistake # 1 - ate sweet milk chocolate not dark chocolateAbout 1 hour afterwards, my gut started "clenching". I felt sharp shooting pains emanating from the area. Lots of gurgling, gas. Later, diarrhea then lots of pure liquid discharge then more diarrhea, gut cramping. The episode lasted for hours. I've had many episodes like this in the past going back decades.Mistake # 2 - ate too much breadThis came recently so the reaction is much less ferocious, but I experienced strong gurgling/gas, faint cramping/shooting pain and the next day, diarrhea with some liquid discharge. These are the only times I've experienced gut cramping with shooting pains, pure liquid discharge along with diarrhea over the last three months. I've started to associate this with "feeding the beast". One of my doctors mentioned these symptoms are characteristic of IBD. Another sarcastically mentioned IBD is a bucket list.

Great product
Product came very quickly. I was not certain what to expect but found that mixing with a few. Ounces of orange juice was a great way to start and end my day. It was not pleasant to taste on its own, but it was not as chalky as u expected either. But the orange juice helped alot.

A little goes a long way.
This is really good. I made tea daily for one week. It is concentrated and a lot for the price. Thank you!

“EXTRACT” WON’T MAKE MUCILAGE
EXTRACT This means it’s not whole marshmallow root powder, but rather a concentrated extract—likely processed to isolate certain constituents (like polysaccharides), which may not include the full mucilage content, or may not gel in the same way.

Good quality
Arrived quickly. So far it works great. We use it to make a more natural marshmallow but I will say no matter what we put it in, smoothie or marshmallows, etc. it does have a very strong “plant” taste.

No scoop.
No scoop. Discovered many others also had no scoop but some did. I thoroughly checked the powder after hearing the scoop is small. Inconsistencies is a red flag in supplements, so that made me pause.

Keeping it stocked!
I bought this to deal with chronic gastritis that nothing else would help with and it’s been my saving grace - taking two small scoops in water two times a day got me back to feeling almost normal at my worst, and I almost like the earthy taste, no need to plug your nose. Plus it goes a long way, I use it almost every day and I’m just about to re-order it 8 months later! My main triggers are alcohol, garlic and onions, caffeine, and NSAIDs - I’ll take some of this before I use any and it helps minimize the pain and some of the bloating. Helps for general overheating/indigestion too! It hasn’t done anything to correct the underlying problem, which I suspect might be SIBO, but it’s allowed me to feel free from the worst of the symptoms which is a blessing.
