No, it plugs into a wall outlet or extension cord.

Q: Why can't i use the ink provided with the kit?

The ink is really poor quality, and potentially dangerous to use on anything aside from practice skins. The tattoo gun is fine though for starting out. The kit says you could use the bla k on human skin... but I wouldn't. I trashed all the ink that came with it and got some ink by industry trusted brands. I'd recommend checking out DYNAMIC for affordable inks to start out. Dynamic black and white are industry standards, they have a good range of colors available AND thry have their own amazon store so you know itbcomes straight from the company and isn't a knockoff.
