Do you need a subscription for the latest app as per so many negative comments?

Yes, you do need the subscription. It is "optional", but without it the product you are buying is "useless". The ONLY option that makes this system "smart" is the ability to automatically (based on geolocation -which works very good) toggle you heating on or off. Without it, Rado is not much better that a "dummy" old £20 thermostat. Considering all this, then I would say that you definitely need the subscription plan.

do these thermostats work with traditional cast iron radiators which retain heat longer than modern steel radiators?

As long as they have a modern valve, they should fit - there are three adapters provided in the box. Temperature is measured by a air sensor on the unit and you can program an offset to adjust its readings. You might need to set your room goal temperature a degree or two lower than the temperature you want to allow for the residual heating effect after the valve turns the water flow off.

Does this valve work with Nest Thermostat?
