Q: Is this submersible? Do you submerse the wire or not?

You submerse the wire, the dial face has a suction cup on its back so that you fit it on the outside of the tank, it has an off on switch which helps save the battery, otherwise the battery will not last long, I acidentally dropped my first one in the water for a few seconds, that was it, it was ruined, so you must make sure it stays dry. Hope this helps you.

Q: Does the readout light up?

There is no backlighting or illumination, just the black LCD numerals on the grey background. It's fairly easy to read, however.

Q: Can i use this in a reptile vivarium, the probe would not be dipped in water as it is a gecko vivarium ? Would it still give an accurate reading?

Not sure, I got mine for my fish tank and it works well with that. I would think it would be fine as your not putting the digital screen part in just the probe.

Q: Does it matter where abouts in the tank you stick the probe? Would furthest from the heater be best to judge general temperature of the tank?

My understanding is that away from the immediate heated water flow and lower in the tank (warm water rises and all that) is going to give a better reading
