I personally, in my family, came to like it, though the graininess makes you wonder if you’ve cooked it through at first. I made it as a breakfast cereal first. My son says it was like eating sand with cream lol. He also didn’t like what he called the aftertaste, which I believe is what most of the ancient grains have. But after a few mouthfuls I got used to it and liked it’s cream of wheat type of flavor, even though it was grainy. My sister said it was like tiny grains of partially cooked grits.Next I did what I call a ‘fonie’ cheese grits-it it’s not as good as grits but it was ok as a healthy substitute and I would eat it again, as would my husband. My son trying it said it’s a no for him, though it’s smoother with cheese he can’t get past the aftertaste and graininess. My other son said if there was nothing else around he’d eat it the cheesy way, but otherwise no.So suffice to say it’s very healthy, but an acquired taste.

First of all, it’s a noom “green” food, meaning not calorically dense. It didn’t totally absorb all the water I used to cook it. But it tastes fine, like a subtle wheat germ or “nutty” not bitter, and above all made me feel energized, focused, clean & healthy rather than crashing me which grains typically will do. So I’ll most likely order it again unless I can find it locally. I cycle fonio & quinoa as my grains. Quinoa has more protein since it’s a seed technically but it’s more calorically dense. Quinoa is larger, easier to work with, more readily available and in different colors, and cheaper. But both are good & I feel slightly cleaner after fonio. I also recently added teff, and generally love all the nourishing food options from Africa.

I absoulutely LOVE this product. It has a delicious texture that reminds me of cous cous or tabouleh and it is SO easy and quick to make -- it takes only about 5 minutes. It is super healthy -- its a grain containing high amounts of protein, iron and fiber. For what it delivers it is very inexpensive --I was able to get three 10 oz bags for about $25 almost 20 servings! It is also incredibly versatile--sort of like the 'chicken of grains'. You can add anything to it and it's delicious... its great as a side, or you can add it to soup, make a grain salad, add any meat or veggie and it can be a full meal.Need I add in the fact that this company does a tremendous amount of charitable work for West Africa where the grain is harvested. So happy to have found this product. Off to order more for myself and for my kids who are total health nuts!

I was curious to discover this new product I had never before tasted. I tried because of the alleged health benefits. On my first batch, the flavor was as described and in fact it was so easy to prepare even a 5-year old little one could do it without any difficulty. Now interns of the health properties, I would be misleading it I were to affirm something I have not tested for long or long enough to distinguish its positive properties. However, my take is that its clean flavor, neutral texture, and versatility wood me. I will for sure purchase more of this product. The problem is the price, it feels too high when compared to say Quinoa. Outside from that, I am in for the long road … I just need to learn more cooking options with it. Great product!!!

So the first time I tried it I didn’t care for it because I wasn’t expecting it to be so grainy. It was my first time ever trying fonio, but the second time I cooked it it turned out perfect and is now one of my favorites! It reminds me of Cream of Wheat which is something I really missed from my childhood. I love that it’s healthy and it’s so mild it can take on any flavor.

I purchased on recommendation of an African friend. I did note a funny scent (I am used to quinoa), hate to say smelled on the verge of rancid. tasted ok, a little dry for me.

If you've found yourself looking at this item your likely already aware, however I'd like to share some of the benefits of Fonio for anyone who may have stumbled upon this product. It's gluten free, high in iron and protien it's also low glycemic making it a great choice for weight loss and/or control. Needless to say this ancient grain is a powerhouse of natural nutrition. I've solely been purchasing this brand of Fonio for about the past 3 years now and it saddens me to write this type of review because I loved supporting this brand and what they originally stood for. I originally found them from an IG alkaline lifestyle influencer and immediately fell in love. It was reasonably priced and came pre-washed (which is a huge plus, if ever you've tried washing fonio, you know that the grains are so tiny, that unless your using cheese cloth your bound to lose 1/8-1/4 of the amount your planning to cook). The last couple times I ordered this a few things changed, there is an inconsistency in the filling of each bag, which when weighed proved that not every bag was 5lbs. Furthermore, I unfortunately no longer see that this is pre-washed and the last 2 bags I purchased had little black bugs in them and the flavor was just off. I never experienced these issues prior to. I've also consistently had issues with the delivery of this product arriving up to a week past the original delivery date and/or arriving damaged and opened. Again, I'd love to continue supporting this business but on account of these issues I won't be giving them anymore of my money until they can rectify the inconsistencies and bring back the clean quality product I fell in love with.
