not a guide to Manchester
'Rather than entitle it `not a guide to Manchester', this informative and entertaining little book might have been more appropriately named `more than a guide to Manchester' since it is packed with a wealth of both strange and interesting facts which must have been painstakingly researched.Although each of the chapters can be read as a stand-alone unit, together they form a very cohesive and pleasing whole. The book can be carried easily in bag or pocket and is filled with some great photographs that may evoke a sense of nostalgia and pride for any Mancunian reading it. I feel that this work will be of as much interest to a dweller in the Manchester area as to a visitor to its streets.`not a guide to Manchester' is the kind of work that you can easily `dip into' and that may encourage you to do your own research on some of the topics covered. Whilst highly edifying, in view of some of its topics, it is a book that clearly does not take itself too seriously. In this respect, it has the right balance of wit and gravity. In the run-up to Christmas, `not a guide to Manchester' would make a great stocking-filler.David

"Could do better"
Very little to it in size and content. A bit like a quick run-down by a Mancunian (or maybe not?) who you've stopped in the street and hasn't got much time to spare/isn't really interested in giving much more than he/she has to. (Poor) Pictures on one page, sparse writing on the other. A page on Bernard Manning, Les Dawson, Coogan etc. But nothing obscure or 'happening now'. Book reminds me of a school set project with stuff culled last minute off the web. List of festivals (8) but doesn't say WHEN or WHERE?!?! Title rather too apt.

It's not a guide book, it's more than that
Ben McGarr's 'Manchester: Not a Guide to' is an essential (and handy) guide to far more than just things to do and see in the UK's third largest city.Everything from local idioms, cultural history, fascinating facts about the area, sport and more. The book is written with a wry humour as well as an accessible style letting you become an instant expert on the city.A great read for people moving to the area from somewhere else or even just visiting for the day.And despite the title, it's also rather good guide book.
