Q: I’ve read that the coating defeats the grounding from skin to metal contact causing excessive humming. Has anyone had this experience?

I don't know that the coating defeats the grounding. I suspect that there is a degree of variability that depends on the pickups. Of all the basses I have played, I have received the most compliments with Black Beauties and Bartolini Pickups. The humming I receive is mostly from the low B string. I have used string dampeners that curtail sympathetic vibrations. Mostly the strings cut the brightness in comparison to uncoated strings and deliver a mellower tone.
