Q: Product description says "digital illuminated compass", while it looks like this is model 137500 with "illuminated analog compass". which one is it?

I would refer to it as analogue, as in..its a dial like the face of a sighting compass, which rotates in the bottom of the left ocular, as you alter your viewing perspective by slewing left or right.The dial appears slightly damped, is easy to read, and is illuminated either by ambient light through a little opaque portal on the upper body, or in darker ambient conditions, by pressing a button on right ocular body which operates a battery powered internal lamp. The compass viewing angle of the analogue readout encompasses around 20 degrees ( i.e. if sighting line is on magnetic North @ 360 degrees, you can see both 350 and 10 degrees of the compass card, in increments of one degree.Hope that is useful. This is a real quality and neat binoculars, only misses a single combined focus wheel ( each monocular must be focused separately). However that said, the depth of field of the focus range is rather good, so good that I only need to alter focus within the 20/30 metres range...outwith that generally I find everything in focus at one setting.

Q: Can these used in a manner that the compass and rangefinder are not in view?

Hi I bought these as a gift. Apparently the compass is visible but you do become accustomed to it. However they were bought specifically for with the compass in mind. If using at night without the light this isn’t as visible. Also the compass doesn’t hinder or obstruct view or performance of the Binoculars. Excellent choice of Binos. Hope this helps.

Compass and reticle are both accessed by the left side , so I reckon you would be fine.

I wouldn't consider these auto focus, more like if ye considered them like a camera lense, they have a greater depth of field, the one in focus. So these, if you set both eyes at marked base point, wee dot, (they focus individually, not linked like most) then I would estimate 50metres to infinity in focus. If you need to focus closer, you will have to focus each eyepiece seperately, to bring the focused depth of field closer (losing clarity at much longer range). It's what suits some particular pursuits, they aren't suitable for bird watching. Marine binoculars have a particular function, where you have the most common usage in focus once set for your eyes, so you can quickly look through for spot observations of range and bearing, often in poor light. If they are for a sailor, boat handling use, then they're great. They give a big field of view, large field in focus, moderate magnification, less sensitive if user is in motion (as you might be in a boat). I hope that helps.
