I have to counteract the ravings of the previous reviewer with a decent review of the great work of one of the earlier explorers of the world of weird and macabre fiction, Arthur Machen. I know nothing of this particular edition of the great writer's works, but unless the volume has been deceptively titled and the stories are actually by someone else, readers hoping for a nocturnal shiver will find themselves well-rewarded by Machen's ability to tread the line between reality and nightmare. Propagandists for religious or political causes should find appropriately genered books upon which to vent their agenda-ridden spleen. Please leave Mr. Machen alone and let the rest of us delight in a good, flesh-crawling yarn or two

i like the author, and this is a nice collection - some stories that don't show up in horror anthologies. i personally like the two column format; i find it easier on the eyes. my only problem with it is that it is a print on demand, and i think amazon should identify it as such, just on principle.

If you favor Lovecraft check this out. Very hard to find in any bookstore. I've searched every Barnes and Nobles, Borders and every small bookstore in between and not one place had any of his works, few even knew who he was!

Excellent collection of Machen's early and later works. New readers as well as those familiar with his writings will definitely enjoy this title.

I've read more boring authors, but he does tend to prioritize dialogue. One would think he was as great as Lovecraft by the overrated reviews.

Machen worked the oddest darkest fantasies with the strangest sexual overtones in many.

I am doing research for an article about a writer who refers to Machn as an inspitration.
