The Yoga Sutras Of Patanjali: Alistair Shearer

A supeb introcduction to Pananjai's Yoga Sutras
This is a beatifully written and accessible commentary to Patanjali's great work. I find other commentaries to the Yoga Sutras are unduly complex but his book by contrast is lucid and helpful. It does not set out to be a 'Teach Yourself' guide but is an inspiring book for a seeker new to yoga or an exprienced traveller on the Way. As a priest and meditation teacher this is in my lifetimes top ten books.The1982 edition was acompanied by lavish phoographs of sacred sites by Richard Lannoy which are not inluded in this new edition.

I teach Yoga and I have found this book very helpful. It is the kind of book I can read over again and gradually absorb what it has to say.

My favorite translation so far.
Alistair Shearer is a fantastic writer, and the book is a very nice small design, easy to read and hold. Just a work of art. Cant wait to read chapters 2,3,4.

A helpful wonderfully written little book!
I have been researching the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali in published format over the past 2 years and physically bought and checked out close to 10 different versions! Many of the translations are not well done (too convoluted and not user-friendly). Others include too many comments with interpretations that are not terribly helpful and often a bit confusing. I keep coming back to this little book by Alistair Shearer. Alistair is quite a renowned British Sanskrit scholar and long-time teacher of transcendental meditation. This little book is just wonderful, and I strongly recommend it. The book first provides an easy concise(!) introduction from a vedic perspective followed by the best translation I have come across. Alistair's writing is very accessible, and I am quite confident most readers will really like it.

The simplest english sutra for the Sanskrit ones- but check author and publication before clicking
This such a beautiful and simple English aphorismic translation of the Sanskrit sutras. I bought the kindle version because that had the correct cover, intro and translation .Somehow, this translation maintains the flow of reading, so much so that you could read in one go.Keep doing it and it will fall in place. The Sanskrit terms when they appear in a sutra have in a way being explained in the sutra before anyway. My suggestion is to keep reading and every time another sutra will catch your eye and … enlightening. All other formats lead to some other translation.Look for Random house book, Shearer and The specific cover before you buy. I will buy the hardover in a bookshop, atleast I will know if I am buying the correct version.

interessante
