When I was in elementary school, I found a raggedy, stained and torn softcover book at a second hand store for 50 cents. It was a collection of Edgar Allan Poe's most famous works. Although I was familiar with The Raven at the time, I did not know his other works. I feel fortunate to have found this book, which became a contributing factor to my love of reading. His works were dark and mysterious to me, and unlike anything I had read before. It was my first taste of gothic horror and probably the first book that I had ever liked the poetry in. When I lived on the East Coast, I made it a point to visit the Poe Museums in Richmond, VA and Baltimore, MD when I was near by. My daughter had taken an interest in Edgar Allan Poe but was only familiar with his most famous works, like The Raven, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Pit & the Pendulum, The Cask of Amontillado, Fall of the House of Usher, etc. I wanted her to be able to enjoy more of his works, including the very obscure ones. Poe is referenced often in pop culture and elsewhere and it's fun to actually get the references, especially if the references are vague so only some people will get the reference. Edgar Allan Poe and his works show up in several episodes of The Simpsons, (including the original Treehouse of Horror and Treehouse of Horror XVIII), in an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants, in an episode of Mr. Peabody and Sherman, in over 300 comic book adaptations, in many other authors written works, many songs from many genres, and countless movies, plays and TV shows. He is even on the cover of one of The Beatles record albums. Talk about influential . . . This is an absolutely beautiful printing of Poe's complete works, which I am hoping will encourage her to read it more. The bonded leather-bound cover is stunning with beautifully engraved artwork of a raven framed in a pattern. The cover is black, red and silver and really stands out. The edges of the pages are gilded in silver leaf and finish off the elegant look of this book. The spine matches the patterns of the cover and will make it stand out in a sea of books. The artwork on the inside covers is also beautiful, with a raven sitting on a tree branch while a full moon breaks through the clouds. Some may find this book gaudy, but for me, I may just leave it cover-out on the shelf in front of other books so that it can be admired.
