Great update for Android programming in Android Studio!
Fantastic guide on android programming that takes you through some interesting and useful projects. This version also takes you through the setup and usage of the fantastic new IDE (Integrated Development Environment) Android Studio which supports Android 5 (Lollipop) onwards. If you're new to Java I would recommend buying the dummies guide on Java along with this book. This book focuses on Java programming for android and so assumes that the reader has a basic grasp of Java programming.Overall, fantastic book written in the incredibly readable style that we've come to expect from dummies guides. Could not recommend enough.

Tailored to Android Studio...
Tailored to Android Studio this book works well for newbies to both the software and Java programming alike. All the dummies book have a way of making things fun and this is no exception. I am using it for work means at the moment and definitely making the process of understanding java and the software faster than any other mean I've found so far.

In depth Android, skipping the basics of Java/XML.
Assumes you know Java and XML which is GREAT otherwise I would be buying a Java book. So it goes straight into what matters and the reason you buy this book. How to program for ANDROID, going straight into a Hello World program, then a silent mode toggle program, etc, you learn very quickly with this so I'm happy with my purchase.

Uncorrected description
I still did not read this book, and that is part of why i'm rating only 3 stars. It's probably a nice explanation of how to publish an application on Google Play, but it does not explain Java programming and that's not good for a complete beginner as i am. It could mention in the description that you already need to know Java to understand this book, but the author did not do that. Because of that, i had to buy another book.

Great start for android studio beginners
This is a get started in android rather than an in depth feature story but great to get you started. make sure that you don't buy the early edition as this focuses on eclipse which IS similar bu different. I found it easy to follow and read.

Content not up to date
While I suspect this book , like most of the Dummies series, was an excellent introduction into its subject content when it was written, the version of Android SDK it references is so old that the book has become almost unusable. I did try to identify the version of SDK used in the book before buying it, but was unable to find out at the time of purchase.Although I am not a professional programmer, I do have a reasonable level of experience using OOP languages, but had hoped this book would help me understand the structure of the Android environment, which on first view appeared complex. Unfortunately, from the screenshots the book appears to be based on Android SDK (Beta)0.8.14 while the version available for download is the latest, which when I downloaded it was 3.2.1.Therefore, in short I would not recommend this book to anyone starting out in Android as many of the descriptions for where things will be found in the file structure are incorrect for the later versions of SDK.
