The movie of a Blixen book that makes Africa come alive, truly wonderful performances!
Meryl and Rob (for it is they) create an intimate portrayl of love and all its joys, stresses and strains, with Syd Pollack bringing everything good from the book, as he directs all the colours of Kenya to the big screen. Karen Blixen was obviously a remarkable women, educated at home, and guided by her Aunt Bess towards womens rights and relationships, she learned French in Switerland, became a painter and widely travelled throughout Europe in her twenties. The movie begins as she proposes a marriage to a friend to begin a new life, and they travel to Kenya in 1914, marry and find themselves in British East Africa with all the class constraints, tribal ignorance and social barriers that brings, particularly to the native peoples. At least she is now a Baroness, and begins to create a coffee plantation from nothing. In the movie her strident endeavours, and connecting with local tribes and chiefs is very well done, and offers many heart warming moments and some wry humour. By 1916 the war begins to make an impact, her hubby pops off to beat the 'bosch' (not a euph!) and womanize his way about the place and so enters dashing Rob, as the articulate and free spirited Denys Finch Hatton, they become lovers, partners possibly even soul mates, and the movie portrays this without that hideous Disney icky feeling some movies portray. A slightly sad ending comes our way, but Lions sitting on your grave is a metaphor for something? isn't it? Some great lines of dialogue throughout make this a very memorable, timeless and touching film to revisit.

Masterpiece of cinema from an age gone by.....
This film encapsulates the mood of film making in the 1980s. It was a relaxed and precise piece of art that allowed the characters to take us on a ride that one truly was able to get lost in. Its not perfect, so let's get them out of the way. There is a completely ridiculous post production green screen after though scene at the beginning that looks like it belongs in a 1950s movie. Technically poor for a film 2 decades younger, let alone in its year. Also Streep is at times given a bit too much to do in one go leading to character dilution and pedestrian pauses and dialogue. Its minor but you will notice it, which is actually a compliment to her acting through out the rest of the film. The best actor in the film for me was Brandauer, he was just amazing and the glue in the script. Redford was decent as was Kitchen and Streep. There are no weak performances and the supporting cast are deep and believable. The cinematography is fabulous apart from a couple of amateur green screen shots and the score was one of the best from that composer. How does the blu ray cope ? Its gives and it takes away , but mostly gives. The extra definition on the wider shots gives a lot more, inside scenes are not so flattered by the higher capture array but that's typical of many 35mm transfers of that era onto hi def. This went through a woke-attack in recent years where its been "revised" as not as good as hyped and obviously many younger viewers felt like they needed a safe space to cope with the reality of colonial life. But that of course is nonsense. It's a very very good movie. Enjoy.

Out of Africa es una joya cinematográfica!!!
