Work
I needed a replacement of 6 BS170 and these worked, so not fake.

Not As Described
These are not mechanically the same as the BS170. The source and drain pins / leads 1 and 3 are reversed on this item compared with the BS170 specification on the data sheet. It is possible that these were manufactured as the very similar 2N7000 transistor, which have this reversed gate and drain pinout / lead configuration compared with the BS170, but this batch has inadvertently been printed with the BS170 label on the flat face of the TO92 package housing, which is common to both types. In theory, these could be soldered onto a PCB with the package body rotated 180 degrees to get the correct connections of the source, gate and drain pins. However, that then leaves the question of whether this item has the electrical specification of a BS170, or a 2N7000, or of some quite different TO92 housed transistor with pin/lead 1 as source, 2 as gate and 3 as drain.I can't say, because I sent the pack of 50 back for a refund after a couple had been destroyed in a PCB in which I assumed that I was getting devices with the correct BS170 pinout / lead configuration.A transistor tester showed that these items are N-channel Enforcement mode MOSFETS, as are BS170s, but my transistor tester is not sophisticated enough to show whether the items supplied can switch the specified 500mA of a BS170, or only the reduced 200mA maximum switching current of a 2N7000.Finally, these are cheaper than other sources of BS170s, so it is possible that somewhere in the manufacturing. distribution, wholesale and retail supply chain, it may be known that these are not fully mechanically and electrically compliant with the specifications in the BS170 datasheet. As such it is disappointing that in mid-August 2023 these are still on sale as BS170s, or at the very least disappointing that no note has been added to the item description about the above issues, given that I, and apparently also another customer indicated the problems to the seller in early May 2023.

Misleading
The drain and source pins are reversed. Avoid.

Wrong pinout.
The Source and Drain pins are swapped when compared to the official OnSemi datasheet. I burned a few of these until I figured that out.
