Good for the price, works well in fair conditions but don't expect miracles and check the speed measurement
Plug in and it works. To get video working on my PC with the software supplied I had to find and download a codec and the first one I tried was blocked by my anti-virus so users may need a certain level of computing expertise and don't try this if you don't have anti-virus on your computer. I need to check the displayed speed with a separate GPS, as the speed displayed on the video footage is about 10% slower than the speed displayed by the playback software, and both are a little lower than I'm expecting - annoying if they've decided to make it look as if people who are speeding are not speeding; for the law-abiding driver using video as evidence after a crash could lead to a false prosecution for lane-hogging if you're actually doing 72 m.p.h. and the video shows you're doing 60 in the middle lane. I know my car speedometer over-reads but not by 20% (previously checked with a map and stopwatch and a GPS)! Picture quality is good but not as good as the more expensive top-of-the-range Nextbase which is a strong competitor here in the UK - the lack of polaroid means you get some reflections from the Asus. Picture looks a bit pixelated and HD is not much better than the lower resolution - sometimes can read license plates but only really if the vehicle is quite close. In good light, about 50% of oncoming traffic plates can be read on a single-carriageway road at speeds of around 30 m.p.h., fewer at higher speed which is perhaps slightly less than the Nextbase. It seems you get what you pay for and this camera is a reasonably competitive priced and I'm keeping it because the slight improvement in picture quality for the Nextbase (which I returned to the shop) is not worth paying 50% extra in my opinion. Performance at night is as expected - can read license plates when you stop at traffic lights and occasionally illuminated by headlights when following close at low speed but not on the open road as other cars are too far away to read plates at speed at night.

Disappointing image quality and bundled software
I bought this because of reviews and recommendations on other sites. Overall, for a product with so many good reviews and a computer manufacturer's brand, this is a disappointing bit of kit. It works, but isn't spectacular. There is a lot of (radial) distortion through the lens, which at this price point and given the ubiquity of good lenses on camera phones is just not good enough. Lane departure warning and collision warning had to be turned off after one journey because of the high rate of false alarms. The media player software that comes with the unit is very poor. It doesn't want to connect properly to google maps, but does integrate ok with baidu maps. However, the micro sd card can be read in a standard reader so you don't have to use their software if you don't need to see the gps trace on a map. I was hoping their player would be able to string multiple files together. If it can, I haven't figured out how to do it yet. Using their interface to navigate through the 76 separate files my first round trip produced is really painful. If I hadn't already used the adhesive pads to fix the power cable to my windscreen I'd send it back. Be warned.

All good but might need to update the Firmware
Just in response to another reviewer, my dashcam has only just been purchased and the unit has also been powering itself off after three minutes, this is apparently a fault in the firmware that is connected with the GPS unit, for which there is a UK firmware update available from ASUS' website ([...]) you'll need to look under others under the OS (Operating system) tab, this isn't exactly the most user friendly place to find the update, but it is there and does update the dashcam successfully. Not sure if you can register the dashcam with Asus, you might have to give them a ring, although it seems as though the warranty will have you go through your seller anyway, in this case Amazon. As for the camera, it all seems to do what it says on the tin, I only give it four stars as it could do with shipping with the latest firmware on it rather than having the faffing about of trying how to fix it and wondering whether it needs to go back to amazon. On the plus side it was an absolute doddle to install and set-up, and the video it takes looks very good.

Does the job
Received promptly.First impressions: Easy to set up (more so when I read the instructions) It hadn't occured to me that the output files are operating system dependant. I run Mac so cannot use the media player but since the files load into iPhoto without problem this suits me. Apparently one can trace the journey on a map using the media player; why anyone would want to do that escapes me. Life is far too short.Once I have finalised on the settings I dont expect to look at the video files unless they are needed for insurance purposes or in case of an accident.I am wondering about buying another one of these to look out of the back of the car, but want a bit more experience with it first

Great device but ... ... ...
The only reason that I haven't given this five stars is because it turns itself off & back on again with annoying regularity. It isn't the power plug - that is a good fit in the cigarette lighter socket, so I assume that it is the device itself.Other than that, it is a good device - the quality of the recording is excellent, & the fact that it is linked to a GPS track is also brilliant. It's just the power thing ... ... ...

So I dont like this but the rest seems to be fine
it switch itself off occasionally when I am driving. So I dont like this but the rest seems to be fine. Nice and easy installation guide, good looking little device. I think it should have an option like constant recording.Few things to highlight.1. Register the product. The camera is not on the list of products supported by ASUS. There is no chance to register it online. For instance, PRODUCT TYPE - doesnt exists under ASUS Car Camera, the other thing2. The camera doesnt operate as it should every 3 minutes it goes to OFF state without any warning etc. I have bought a product to record not to hang over my windscreen.3. There are no updates as the seller mentioned.
