Highly recommend. Great product

It is beautiful. Solid lacquer, nice gold trim, nib placement is unique for nowadays. Grease from hand is visible on it, so you end up wiping it a lot. Writing with it is a joy, smooth and wet. High capacity cartridges last surprisingly long. One criticism is that the cap collar can come off. When that happens you will feel pain, so I returned one and am babying it's replacement.Do not take to school and certainly never give to heathens with no understanding of fountain pens.

Having had a very good Waterman for 12 years (and then I lost it), I noticed that the twist mechanism appears to be much looser on this Waterman pen. I wonder if it will last longer or whether the mechanism will wear out. Perhaps Waterman made adjustments, (or perhaps it was used previously, say, as a display pen, given it was bought from a stationery shop, albeit through Amazon). One will never know these things short of clarifying with the manufacturer. Other than the twist, it looks super brilliant, not too much weight and writes very well. As with most pens in this price bracket it came with a somewhat huge presentation box along with a 3-year warranty found underneath the lower side of the box. Delivery was free, very fast and very well packaged with bubble wrap. Overall, I would very much recommend this Waterman pen but as you are well aware, it's best to shop around as the retail price do vary.

Very elegant and high quality

Make sure that you give it a good flush with weak ammonia first - I have three Waterman pens, and they were all a nightmare before this procedure. Now, they are all a joy to use. The balance is perfect, the nib is nice and smooth (medium should be called 'slightly fat medium', heavy, feels expensive, and is really nice to make excuses to use. I write notes and send a copy of them on my phone rather than text - much more personal.Had mine a while now, and it's never skipped or scratched (after the initial clean).So, highly recommended if you like things like this (I do, and I'm prepared to spend over the top to keep this going).

I use this pen to write in my journal. I like to write with a fountain pen and I have many of them. But this is my favourite and I will use this for a long-time to come.

As soon as you pick up the pen it feels and looks superb. Well balanced with a nice weight and feel to it. I fell in love with this as soon as I opened the box… Will never need to buy another pen 🖊️

I use this pen at work. I had one for 20 years that still worked great until I dropped it directly on the point. It still worked ok but I goofed up the mechanism. This new one should last until I retire.

Feel in your hand is comfortable. Beautiful finish, mechanism works great. Vendor was a pleasure to deal with, expeditously shipped.

The Carène is a bit of a sleeper. Waterman as a brand seems thoroughly uninterested in the hobbyist fountain pen scene, so it has little social media presence, but it does have excellent old world customer service run by actual people rather than algorithms or bots. Their aftermarket nib service is superlative! And this pen is a beauty.But you must be OK with hard nibs. Completely inflexible but it writes very smoothly, with a distinctive Waterman feel, and is not at all fussy or delicate. Metal cap and body construction with great balance and weight and looks sharp. Makes a nice gift, as well as a daily writer. Worth considering among other more popular hard gold nib pens like the Platinum 3776 or Sailor Pro Gear. My personal preference is actually for softer nibs and yet I like the Carène enough to have two!A few cons:--Plastic grip section scuffs from repeated cap on-off (the marks are noticeable enough to bother me).--Ink seems to dry out quickly if not in regular use, compared to other slide-snap caps.--Doesn't matter in the black colorway, but placing the same black grip on everything regardless of pen body color/finish makes some colorways look a bit cheap to my eyes.--Cost. I was lucky enough to snag at deep discount here on Amazon, so it isn't always at/near retail, but you may have to wait and hunt.
